THE COFFEE AT THANKSGIVING / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Anna’s BoxNothing obvious was stolen.

Televisions remained.

Jewelry remained.

Cash remained.

Only one room had been disturbed.

The attic.

Lily noticed an old wooden box was missing.

It had belonged to her mother, Anna.

“Why would anyone want Mom’s things?”

Eleanor suddenly remembered.

Years earlier, Anna had worked briefly as an accountant for Daniel’s company.

Before her death.

Rebecca searched old files.

Anna had resigned six months before the car accident that killed her.

No one remembered why.

Then Mark found something.

Anna had given him an envelope shortly before she died.

He had forgotten it inside a locked desk after assuming it contained old family paperwork.

Inside were copies of financial records.

Ten years old.

Names.

Transfers.

Robert Vance.

Daniel Carter.

Shell companies.

Anna had discovered irregular financing years before the current crisis.

At the bottom of one page she had written:

Daniel says Robert will fix it. I think Robert is the problem.

Lily stared.

“Did Dad know she had this?”

Probably.

Did Robert?

Almost certainly.

Then came the question nobody wanted to ask.

Had Anna’s death really been an accident?

Detective Hale refused to speculate.

“We reopen records.”

“That is all.”

The old crash investigation showed no immediate evidence of homicide.

A rainstorm.

A dangerous curve.

No proven sabotage.

Lily struggled with that.

“But what if—”

“We follow evidence.”

Eleanor held her hand.

“Your mother deserves truth.”

“Not a story made bigger because we are angry.”

The financial documents were enough to expose something else.

Robert Vance had spent over a decade manipulating Daniel.

He did not create Daniel’s greed.

But he fed it.

Loan after loan.

Rescue after rescue.

Until Daniel owed him too much to walk away.

Anna had seen it beginning.

She tried to stop it.

Daniel ignored her.

Now Robert wanted the box because it tied him to the fraud years before Claire ever entered the family.

Police issued additional warrants.

Robert remained missing.

Then Eleanor received a phone call.

His voice.

“Mrs. Carter.”

She put it on speaker.

“What do you want?”

“The original trust documents.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand how many people your son has put at risk.”

Eleanor answered:

“My son will answer for what he did.”

“So will you.”

“No.”

She looked at Lily.

“I’m done answering for other people’s greed.”

Robert’s voice became cold.

“Then perhaps the girl will.”

The call ended.

Lily went pale.

Eleanor did not.

May you like

She looked at Detective Hale.

“Now you have your threat.”
