Chapter 4 - The Doctor Who Never Examined HerThree weeks after the staircase incident, Eleanor received a court notice.

Lily found her sitting at the kitchen table holding it.
“What is it?”
Eleanor handed her the envelope.
A petition had been filed requesting temporary guardianship over Eleanor Carter.
Reason:
Progressive cognitive decline and inability to manage financial affairs.
Proposed guardian:
Daniel Carter.
Lily stared.
“He actually did it.”
Eleanor read further.
Attached was a physician’s declaration.
Dr. Steven Mercer.
It described:
Severe memory impairment.
Disorientation.
Repeated unsafe behavior.
Inability to understand financial documents.
Eleanor looked up.
“I have never met this doctor.”
Detective Hale confirmed it.
Dr. Mercer had never examined Eleanor.
When questioned, he initially claimed a clerical mistake.
Then investigators discovered payments from a consulting firm tied to Daniel’s development company.
Eleanor’s attorney, Rebecca Sloan, attacked the guardianship petition immediately.
At the hearing, Eleanor walked into court herself.
She answered every question.
Names.
Dates.
Trust structures.
Property values.
Medical history.
The judge looked toward Daniel’s attorneys.
“Your petition describes a woman who cannot identify the year.”
Eleanor said:
“I can identify my son’s debts too, if that would help.”
Lily almost smiled.
The guardianship request was denied.
But outside court, Daniel approached Eleanor.
“Mom, please.”
She stopped.
“This has gone too far.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“You think I wanted any of this?”
“I don’t know what you want anymore.”
“I’m trying to keep everything from collapsing.”
Eleanor stared.
“The company?”
“Yes.”
“Our family?”
“Yes.”
“You?”
He did not answer.
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“That is the first honest thing you’ve said.”
Daniel reached for her hand.
She stepped away.
“You forged a medical opinion about me.”
“I didn’t forge it.”
“No.”
“You only paid the people who did.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand the consequences if I lose those investors.”
“Then tell the truth.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
He looked toward Lily.
Then back at Eleanor.
“Because it isn’t just my company anymore.”
Before he left, he said something strange.
“If I go down, other people go down too.”
That night, Detective Hale called.
Dr. Mercer had begun cooperating.
And he gave them a name no one expected.
Robert Vance.
Daniel’s largest investor.
The man who had financed nearly every failed project.
The same man who had secretly purchased liens against several Carter family properties.

Daniel was desperate.
But Robert Vance had built the trap.
