THE COFFEE AT THANKSGIVING / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Ledger Daniel HidThe audit lasted nine days.

What it uncovered was worse than anyone expected.

Daniel had hidden more than sixty-eight million dollars in liabilities.

He borrowed against development projects that did not exist.

Moved money between companies.

Used new investors to cover older debts.

Not a simple business failure.

Potential fraud.

But another detail mattered more.

Robert Vance had known.

Rebecca discovered emails.

Robert:

Your mother has enough assets to stabilize this.

Daniel:

She won’t sign.

Robert:

Then stop asking her like a son. Start solving the problem like a businessman.

Another message.

Daniel:

I will not hurt her.

Robert:

Nobody said anything about hurting anyone.

Then, two months later:

She only needs to appear incapable long enough to transfer emergency authority.

Lily stared at the screen.

“So Dad knew.”

Eleanor said nothing.

Then another email appeared.

Daniel to Robert:

Claire is handling the medical side. I don’t want details.

That sentence destroyed the final defense Daniel had maintained.

He had not personally put anything in Eleanor’s coffee.

But he knew Claire was trying to make her appear ill.

He chose not to ask how.

Eleanor closed the laptop.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then she said:

“Call Daniel.”

Rebecca frowned.

“Why?”

“I want him to hear my voice before the police hear his.”

Daniel answered on the second ring.

“Mom?”

Eleanor looked toward Lily.

Then:

“I found the emails.”

Silence.

Daniel started crying.

Not loudly.

“I never meant for this.”

“I know.”

“You have to believe me.”

“I believe you wanted the result without wanting responsibility for the method.”

Daniel said nothing.

Eleanor continued.

“That is not innocence.”

“Robert threatened me.”

“You still made choices.”

“He said investors would destroy us.”

“No.”

Eleanor’s voice remained calm.

“He threatened your money.”

“You threatened my mind.”

Daniel whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

Pause.

“But that does not undo what you chose.”

The same words Eleanor had once spoken at Thanksgiving.

This time Daniel understood them.

He surrendered to investigators the next morning.

But Robert Vance disappeared.

And while Daniel was being processed—

May you like

someone entered Eleanor’s old house.

They were searching for something.
