Chapter 18 - Rosa Returned to Columbia

Spring arrived slowly.

The scandal disappeared from headlines.

Charles Weller surrendered documents to investigators.

The Caldwell Foundation publicly acknowledged improper interference in Rosa’s university funding.

Ethan refused to hide behind carefully written corporate language.

The statement named Rosa.

It admitted wrongdoing.

It established a fund for students whose education had been interrupted by pregnancy, childcare responsibilities, or financial pressure.

Rosa initially hated the idea.

Then she helped redesign it.

“If my name is anywhere near this thing, students get childcare support.”

Ethan smiled.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“And emergency medical grants.”

“Yes.”

“And no ridiculous essay explaining why they deserve help.”

Ethan laughed.

“You are terrifying in meetings.”

“I learned from you.”

Months later, Rosa stood outside Columbia University holding Lily’s hand.

Ethan stood beside them.

“You can still change your mind,” he said.

Rosa glared at him.

“Do not give me an escape route.”

“Understood.”

She looked toward the science building.

She had dreamed of returning.

Now that she was here, fear pressed against her chest.

“What if I’m not good anymore?”

Ethan answered immediately.

“You are.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

“But I know you.”

Rosa looked at Lily.

“What if this takes too much time away from her?”

Lily was busy trying to make Button wear a leaf as a hat.

Ethan crouched beside her.

“Hey, Lily.”

She looked up.

“Do you want Mama to be a scientist?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Mama is smart.”

Rosa laughed nervously.

Ethan stood.

“The committee meets in twenty minutes.”

Rosa stared at the doors.

Then she walked inside.

Three hours later, she emerged crying.

Ethan’s heart dropped.

“What happened?”

Rosa handed him a folder.

He opened it.

REINSTATEMENT APPROVED.

FULL ACADEMIC CREDIT REVIEW AUTHORIZED.

RESEARCH PLACEMENT CONFIRMED.

Ethan smiled.

“You did it.”

Rosa shook her head.

“No.”

“I started again.”

He understood the difference.

Lily jumped around them.

“Mama scientist!”

People walking past smiled.

Rosa knelt and hugged her daughter.

Ethan watched them.

He no longer wanted to rescue Rosa.

That had been another form of control.

He wanted to stand beside her while she rescued the parts of herself life had forced her to abandon.

Later that evening, they returned to the estate.

A package waited near the piano.

No return address.

Inside was a small music book.

The first page contained a handwritten message.

For Lily.

I hope someday you play something more beautiful than the silence I helped create.

Victoria.

Rosa read it twice.

Then she placed the book beside the piano.

Lily climbed onto the bench.

“Can I use it?”

Rosa smiled.

“Yes.”

Ethan sat beside her.

Lily opened the first page.

Then looked at both of them.

“Ready?”

Rosa and Ethan exchanged a glance.

May you like

“Ready.”

And Lily began to play.
