Chapter 15 - The Night Lily Disappeared

The worst night began with silence.

Rosa woke at 2:17 in the morning.

Something felt wrong.

Mothers develop instincts no science has fully explained.

She walked into Lily’s bedroom.

The bed was empty.

Button was gone.

Rosa’s blood turned cold.

“Lily?”

No answer.

She checked the bathroom.

Nothing.

The hallway.

Nothing.

The kitchen.

Nothing.

“Lily!”

Ethan woke in the main house when security called.

He reached the employee wing barefoot.

Rosa was shaking.

“She’s gone.”

Ethan felt terror unlike anything he had ever known.

The estate immediately locked down.

Security officers searched every room.

Garden lights activated.

Cameras were checked.

At 2:31, Harold found the first clue.

A small pink slipper beside the east staircase.

Rosa nearly collapsed.

Ethan picked it up.

Then he heard something.

A piano note.

Soft.

Almost impossible to hear.

Another note followed.

Ethan turned toward the east parlor.

He ran.

The room was dark except for moonlight.

Lily sat at the piano.

Button rested beside her.

Rosa rushed forward.

“Oh, my God.”

She pulled Lily into her arms.

“What are you doing?”

Lily started crying because Rosa was crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan leaned against the piano.

His knees nearly failed.

Rosa held Lily’s face.

“You never leave your room alone at night.”

“I know.”

“Why did you come here?”

Lily pointed toward the piano.

“Grandma song.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“I dreamed about Grandma.”

Rosa looked at Ethan.

Lily continued.

“She said Daddy was sad.”

The room went still.

“And I had to play.”

Ethan turned away.

He knew it was only a dream.

A child’s imagination.

Nothing more.

But grief does not care about logic.

Lily climbed onto the bench.

“Come here, Daddy.”

Ethan sat beside her.

Rosa wrapped a blanket around Lily’s shoulders.

Together they played “Morning Light.”

Halfway through the melody, Ethan stopped.

His hands trembled.

Lily looked at him.

“Why did you stop?”

Ethan stared at the keys.

“My mother played this the night before she died.”

Rosa had never known that.

“She was sick for a long time.”

“She knew she probably wouldn’t come home from the hospital.”

“And she made me promise something.”

Lily whispered,

“What?”

Ethan’s voice broke.

“She told me never to let this house become more important than the people inside it.”

He laughed bitterly.

“And I did exactly that.”

Rosa sat beside him.

“You were young.”

“I’m not young anymore.”

Lily placed her tiny hand over his.

“House isn’t important.”

Ethan looked at her.

She pointed toward Rosa.

“Mama important.”

Then toward herself.

“Lily important.”

Then she touched Ethan’s chest.

“Daddy important.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

May you like

Rosa rested her head against his shoulder.

For the first time, neither moved away.
