Chapter 1 - The Question That Stopped the Room

“Is she mine?”

Rosa closed her eyes.

There were moments in life when silence could protect you.

This was no longer one of them.

She lowered herself beside Lily.

Her daughter was still crying, although the first terrified screams had faded into frightened hiccups.

Rosa gently touched the side of Lily’s head.

There was no blood.

But a bruise had already begun forming near her temple.

Ethan moved closer.

“Rosa.”

His voice cracked.

“Please answer me.”

Victoria suddenly stepped between them.

“This is ridiculous.”

Ethan did not even look at her.

Victoria folded her arms.

“She works here, Ethan.”

Rosa looked up sharply.

Victoria continued.

“She knows exactly who you are.”

“She could have planned this.”

That finally made Ethan turn.

His expression was colder than Victoria had ever seen.

“You just shoved a three-year-old child onto a marble floor.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“I barely touched her.”

Lily buried her face against Rosa’s chest.

Ethan saw the movement.

His jaw clenched.

“I saw enough.”

Victoria opened her mouth.

Ethan raised one hand.

“Not another word.”

The room fell silent again.

Rosa slowly stood while holding Lily.

Her knees felt weak.

She had imagined this conversation hundreds of times.

None of those imaginary conversations had begun with her daughter lying injured on the floor.

“Yes.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Rosa swallowed.

“Yes, Ethan.”

“She’s yours.”

The answer seemed to physically strike him.

He looked at Lily.

Then at Rosa.

Then back at Lily.

Three years.

A birthday in August.

Their last night together.

The mathematics required no imagination.

“Oh, God.”

Ethan stepped backward.

Victoria stared between them.

“No.”

Nobody answered her.

Victoria shook her head harder.

“No.”

“This woman is lying.”

Ethan whispered,

“Victoria.”

“She is lying.”

Victoria pointed at Rosa.

“Look at her.”

“She suddenly appears inside your house with a child three years later?”

“You don’t think that’s suspicious?”

Rosa’s humiliation burned away.

Something stronger replaced it.

“You think I wanted this?”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe you became a maid in a billionaire’s mansion by coincidence?”

Rosa stared at her.

“I didn’t know this house belonged to Ethan when I accepted the agency assignment.”

Victoria rolled her eyes.

“Convenient.”

Ethan moved toward Rosa.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

That question hurt more than Victoria’s insults.

Rosa looked directly into his eyes.

“Because when I tried to reach you, you disappeared.”

Ethan frowned.

“I never disappeared.”

Rosa gave a broken laugh.

“You changed your number.”

“No.”

“Your apartment was empty.”

“My father had a heart attack.”

“Your office told me you were unavailable.”

“I was in London.”

“I sent letters.”

Ethan froze.

Rosa continued.

“I sent six.”

Something changed in his expression.

“I never received them.”

Rosa stared at him.

“What?”

“I never received a single letter from you.”

Victoria suddenly looked away.

It lasted less than a second.

But Ethan noticed.

Before he could speak, Lily whimpered.

“My head hurts.”

Everything else vanished.

Ethan stepped forward immediately.

“We’re going to the hospital.”

Victoria reached for his arm.

“What about us?”

Ethan looked down at her hand.

Then slowly removed it.

“There is no us until I know that child is safe.”

He picked up his keys.

Then he looked at Rosa.

For the first time, his voice softened.

“Let me carry her.”

Rosa hesitated.

Lily looked at Ethan.

The little girl studied him carefully.

Then she stretched out her arms.

And Ethan Caldwell lifted his daughter for the first time.
