Aria hated them.

One night she threw a newspaper onto Ethan’s kitchen island.

“You didn’t rescue me.”

Ethan looked up.

“I’m aware.”

“The papers aren’t.”

“Papers are frequently wrong.”

“I climbed out the window.”

“Yes.”

“I ran.”

“Yes.”

“I stopped your car.”

“Yes.”

“You opened the door.”

“Yes.”

“That’s all.”

Ethan nodded.

“That’s all.”

Her anger disappeared slightly.

Most men she knew would have wanted credit.

Ethan wanted accuracy.

Then he admitted something.

“I almost didn’t stop.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I thought involving myself in strangers’ problems usually makes things worse.”

“But you did.”

“You looked terrified.”

Aria stared at him.

“That’s not a romantic answer.”

“Good.”

He was not trying to become her reward.

That mattered.

Their relationship remained cautious.

Aria moved into a separate apartment arranged through her own trust attorney.

Ethan did not protest.

She began therapy.

Reclaimed financial control.

Applied for the architecture position Victoria once forced her to reject.

And learned to spend money that had legally been hers for years without feeling guilty.

Ethan visited occasionally.

Coffee.

Dinner.

No pressure.

No rescue fantasy.

The first time he kissed her came almost nine months after the storm.

He asked first.

Aria laughed.

“You negotiate billion-dollar acquisitions with less anxiety.”

“Those have lawyers.”

“So do I.”

“Terrifying.”

She kissed him.

Not because he saved her.
