Chapter 6 - The Aftermath in Washington

While I continued my morning duties at the military base, thousands of miles away in Washington State, absolute chaos had descended upon my mother’s household.

According to subsequent frantic text messages and voicemail logs that flooded my phone over the next two hours, the house on Whispering Pine Lane had transformed into a war zone. Marcus Vance, desperate to distance himself from Dorian’s criminal stupidity, had personally driven out to the property accompanied by two local county deputies to serve notice of contract termination and secure the premises.

Dorian had reportedly attempted to lock himself in the master bedroom, screaming that the cabin belonged to him by marriage, only to be dragged out in his bathrobe while shouting obscenities at the neighborhood.

Brielle’s much-anticipated trip to Maui was cancelled on the spot as the airline tickets—purchased using a fraudulent advance on the illegal sale—were flagged by the credit card company for suspected wire fraud.

My mother, realizing that her golden-boy husband was nothing more than a liability wrapped in cheap cologne, finally snapped. Instead of defending him, she joined the chorus of accusers, screaming at Dorian as the deputies cuffed his wrists and led him down the front porch steps in front of the gaping, gossiping neighbors.

By mid-morning, my phone buzzed with an incoming message from a local attorney whom my father had retained years prior to oversee the trust execution.

“Miss Calder,” the text read. “The property has been fully secured, re-registered, and locked down under strict trustee guidelines. The fraudulent deeds have been nullified by the district court. Your father’s legacy is entirely safe. Please let us know when you would like to inspect the estate.”

I stared at the screen, a quiet, genuine smile finally touching my lips. The cabin stood untouched, its cedar walls weathering the Pacific Northwest rain just as they had for decades, weathering the storm just like I had.

My father’s wisdom echoed softly in my mind: “Slow work lasts, Maren. Rushed work comes apart.”

Dorian had tried to rush his way into wealth, and his entire world had disintegrated in less than six hours. My father’s foundation, built with patience and integrity, had stood firm against the test.
