Chapter 10 - A New Beginning

The sun was setting behind the Cascade Mountains, casting a brilliant crimson and gold glow across the mountain ridge.

I was sitting on the wooden front porch rocking chair, holding a steaming mug of hot tea, watching the evening mist roll gently through the valley below. My military duffel bag rested near the front door—I had officially transitioned to my new stateside intelligence command just three days prior, placing me only a two-hour drive from the estate.

My phone chimed softly on the small wooden table beside me.

It was a notification from the county land registry confirming that the Whispering Pine estate had been officially and permanently transferred into an independent, protected heritage trust bearing my sole name, completely shielded from any future interference, marriage certificates, or external claims.

A moment later, a second text arrived. This one was from my mother, letting me know that her divorce proceedings from Dorian were moving forward smoothly, and she had taken a steady job at a local bookstore to support herself. She didn't ask for money. She didn't ask for favors. She simply wished me peace.

I smiled, locked my phone screen, and set it down on the table.

The drama that had threatened to tear my father’s legacy apart had burned itself out in a flash of greed and legal consequence. Dorian was facing years behind bars, Brielle was learning the hard way that life isn't a free vacation, and my mother was finally standing on her own two feet.

As for me? I was home.

The mountain air filled my lungs, cool and pure, carrying the promise of quiet mornings, steady work, and a future built on solid foundations that no fraudster could ever tear down. I took a slow sip of my tea, leaned back in the rocking chair, and watched the first evening stars light up the vast Pacific Northwest sky.
