Chapter 4 - The Wake-Up Call

Dorian Pike was sitting at his breakfast table in Washington State, enjoying what he believed was his ultimate triumph, when his phone rang.
It was 4:30 AM local time. According to the encrypted tracking signal I had routed through a quiet digital gateway, he and Brielle were scheduled to fly out to Maui by noon. The air in their kitchen smelled of cheap pancake syrup and bubbling champagne—celebrating money they hadn't earned yet.
I patched Marcus Vance into the active call. Both men were now connected on a three-way line, completely unaware that I was listening silently in the background like a ghost in the machine.
"Pike speaking," Dorian answered, his voice thick with sleep and irritation. "Who the hell is calling at this hour?"
"Mr. Pike!" Marcus Vance’s voice erupted through Dorian’s phone, cracking with sheer terror. "What kind of game are you playing with me?! Why didn't you tell me about the trust?!"
Dorian paused, the sound of silverware clattering against a plate stopping abruptly. "What? What trust? What are you talking about, Marcus? We signed the papers! The money is supposed to clear today!"
"The money isn't clearing anywhere!" Vance shouted back, his voice pitching higher in panic. "The property is locked in an irrevocable family trust! The daughter—Maren Calder—is the sole legal trustee! If we push these documents through today, I lose my license, and you're going straight to a federal penitentiary for wire fraud and forgery!"
For a long, agonizing moment, there was total silence in Dorian’s kitchen.
I could practically see the blood draining from his face. The cocky swagger, the arrogant chuckles about throwing away my father’s medals, the smug satisfaction of funding Brielle’s Hawaiian holiday—all of it shattered into a million tiny pieces against the cold wall of reality.
"That's... that's impossible," Dorian finally sputtered, his voice trembling violently. "My wife said—she said the cabin belonged to her! She said we could sell it whenever we wanted!"
"Your wife doesn't own a single shingle on that roof!" Vance roared back. "And neither do you! The real owner is on her way—or worse, her military legal team is already reviewing the paperwork! W-wait... whose name is listed on this hidden deed?!"
"Mine," I said softly, breaking my silence.
The single word cut through the phone line like a razor blade.
Dorian gasped, choking on his own saliva. "Maren? How... how are you on this line? What is the meaning of this?!"
"You sold my father’s cabin, Dorian," I said, every syllable dripping with icy precision. "You forged signatures, you conspired to commit fraud, and you thought you could hide behind my mother’s apron strings while you stole my inheritance. Well, the bill has come due."

"Maren, please!" Dorian’s voice instantly morphed from arrogant bully to a pathetic, whimpering coward. "We can talk about this! We can work something out! It was just a misunderstanding—Brielle has her heart set on this trip, your mother has been so stressed—"
"Save it for the judge," I replied, and ended the call.
