Chapter 7 - The Guardian’s Key

The temporary order gave Celia control of my financial accounts but not physical custody. That distinction kept me out of a locked ward and placed me in a private evaluation center instead.I never reached it.At the courthouse exit, Marcus created a diversion by arguing with a clerk about the order’s defective service. Lena took my arm, and we entered a parking garage through a stairwell.“We are violating a court order,” I said.“We are preventing a fraudulent guardian from delivering you to a facility she controls,” Marcus replied.“A judge may see that differently.”“Then give the judge a reason to see it your way.”We drove to a hotel near Hartsfield-Jackson under my middle name. The room had one bed, one chair, and a view of airplanes rising through gray clouds.I opened the video again.Brandon’s signature on the 2014 document looked almost identical to mine. Celia had used him as the witness, then later made it appear that I had authorized the transaction.“Why would she need my identity?” I asked.Marcus studied the screen. “Your father’s trust may have required a beneficiary-linked signature before funds could be transferred.”“So Celia used my blank refinance page.”“Maybe. The handwriting expert will tell us.”“We need one.”“I know someone.”“You know a lot of people.”“It’s my only marketable skill.”The hotel phone rang.No caller identification.I answered. “Who is this?”“You have twenty-four hours to return to the house.”“Brandon?”“Your husband is not the only person who can reach you.”“Celia?”The caller laughed. “She thinks the money belongs to her. She is wrong.”“Who does it belong to?”“The person who lost it.”The line went dead.I pulled the phone from the wall.Marcus said, “Could be Warren.”“Or Pike.”“Pike is dead.”“That’s what the caller said.”Lena looked toward the window. “Your father once told me Lionel Pike had a daughter.”“What was her name?”“Mara.”Marcus searched the state database. Mara Pike had been a forensic accountant in Charlotte. She had left her firm three years earlier after accusing a client of laundering money through a family trust.“That client was Bellwether,” I said.“She disappeared after the accusation.”The hotel room door clicked. We all froze.Someone had inserted a key card.Marcus motioned toward the bathroom. Lena moved behind the door. I picked up the heavy lamp. The door opened.A woman stepped inside. She was in her early forties, with dark hair pulled into a knot and a scar along her jaw. She held both hands in the air.“I’m Mara Pike,” she said.I kept the lamp raised. “Close the door.”She did.“How did you find us?”“Your father left instructions.”“Everyone says that.”“Then ask me something only he would know.”“What did he call the third floor of Northstar?”“The attic,” Mara answered. “Even though it was a basement.”Lena lowered her hand.Mara placed a file on the desk. “Your father believed my father stole the money. He was wrong.”“Who stole it?”“Celia.”“We know she directed the transfer.”“You know the visible part.”Mara opened the file. It contained invoices from Northstar vendors. Each vendor had made small payments to a company called Mayfield Services. The payments totaled $3.18 million.“Mayfield was owned by my father,” she said. “He thought he was receiving consulting fees. Celia used him as a pass-through.”“Why would he agree?”“She threatened to expose his gambling debts. He signed documents without reading them.”“Then the first theft was Celia’s.”“Partly. The money was moved into a reserve account in your name.”I leaned closer. “Why?”“Because your father created the Vesper control system after he discovered the fraud. He froze the funds and linked the reserve to your identity. Celia could access it only if you appeared to authorize the transfer.”“Which is why she needed my signature.”“And why she built the psychiatric story. If you were declared incapable, a guardian could sign for you.”Marcus said, “The hidden ledger would record the transfer.”“It records more than that,” Mara replied. “It records who opened the trap.”She handed me a flash drive.“There are access logs from the last six months. Someone has been entering the Vesper system from your house.”“Celia?”“No. A device registered to Brandon.”The room fell silent.I thought of his hand on the kitchen glass. His fear. His claims that he was protecting the money.“He was working with her,” I said.“He was working for himself,” Mara replied. “Celia promised to erase his debt. Brandon believed he could take enough from the reserve to start over.”“And Gertrude?”“Gertrude knew about the debt. She may not know the extent of the theft.”The hotel phone began ringing again.Mara looked at me. “Don’t answer.”I answered.Gertrude said, “Abigail, Brandon has been arrested.”My grip tightened.“For what?”“The police found blood on the kitchen floor.”“Whose?”“They won’t tell me.”“Where is he?”“County jail. Celia says you caused this.”“Celia says whatever protects her.”Gertrude’s voice broke. “You don’t understand. She has something on us.”“What?”“Come to the house.”“No.”“Then I will tell the prosecutor that you planned the accident yourself.”The call ended.Mara closed the file. “She is baiting you.”“Yes.”“You will still go.”“Not to the house.”I looked at the flash drive.“I’m going to the jail.”
