Chapter 18 - The Last Transfer

The private airfield lay beyond a row of pecan trees outside Montgomery. Agent Cross sent two vehicles, but she warned me that federal arrest authority was still being finalized.“If we find Celia with the token, stay behind the agents,” she said.“I will.”Marcus sat beside me in the government SUV. His eyebrow was stitched, and his left hand was wrapped.“You are a terrible liar,” he said.“I am a very good lawyer.”“That is not the same thing.”The airfield’s hangar doors stood open. A small jet waited on the runway. Celia was beside the stairs, speaking to a pilot.Helen’s company car was parked near the hangar.“She took Helen’s car,” I said.Agent Cross raised her hand. The vehicles stopped.“Celia Voss,” she called. “Step away from the aircraft.”Celia turned. She wore a black coat and carried the crescent token in one hand. In the other, she held a phone.“If you arrest me,” she said, “the transfer completes.”Cross motioned for everyone to hold.“You are bluffing,” Marcus said.“Ask Abigail.”The token’s status appeared on my phone. It was connected to the Vesper system. The final override screen waited.BENEFICIARY AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.“What do you want?” I asked.“A plane and a clean account.”“You are asking me to authorize your theft.”“I am asking you to save Gertrude.”My phone displayed a live video.Gertrude sat in a dark room with her hands bound. Brandon knelt beside her, blood on his shirt.“Celia,” he said weakly, “let her go.”“You are not in a position to negotiate.”“The safe override requires Abigail’s voice and signature.”“Then convince her.”Brandon looked at the camera. “Abby, do what she says.”Gertrude shook her head. “No.”Celia pressed a pistol to Gertrude’s temple.I stepped forward. “I will authenticate.”Cross caught my arm. “No.”“If I refuse, she kills them.”“We are tracing the signal.”“You do not have time.”Celia smiled. “Your father built a trap for dishonest hands. He forgot that honest people can be cornered.”She was wrong. My father had not forgotten. He had simply expected me to make a choice he could not make for me.“I need to see the authorization screen,” I said.“You can see it on your phone.”“No. The system requires a live biometric confirmation.”“Approach the token reader.”I walked toward her.Cross whispered, “We are thirty seconds from a clean shot.”“You have ten.”At the reader, I held out my hand.Celia placed the token against my palm. The system scanned my fingerprint. A second prompt appeared.ENTER REASON FOR OVERRIDE.I typed: FRAUDULENT COERCION—PRESERVE EVIDENCE.Celia watched the screen. “What are you doing?”“Authenticating.”“The reason is not required.”“It is now.”The system flashed red.OVERRIDE REFUSED. COERCION DETECTED.Celia grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the aircraft stairs.Cross shouted, “Drop the weapon!”Celia fired. The bullet struck the metal reader. I twisted free and fell beneath the wing. Cross and two agents advanced. The pilot ran.Celia fled toward the hangar.I followed.Inside, Gertrude and Brandon were tied to chairs beside a stack of fuel drums. Celia reached the far door and raised the pistol toward the drums.“Stop,” I said. She turned.“If you shoot, the fire will kill all of us.”“You think I care?”“I think you care about controlling the ending.”Her eyes narrowed.“You stole because you believed no one else could protect you,” I said. “You turned every person into an account. You called it survival because that sounded better than greed.”Her hand trembled.“You know nothing about me.”“I know you paid Bell. I know you used Tate. I know you threatened my mother and killed her. I know you built the reserve and then tried to make me look like the thief.”“Your mother was going to destroy you.”“She was trying to save me.”“She was trying to save herself.”“Both can be true.”The words stopped her.Brandon whispered, “Celia, put it down.”She looked at him with contempt. “You were always the weakest link.”“I know.”He leaned backward, tipping his chair into the fuel drums. One drum rolled between Celia and the others.Cross fired. The bullet struck Celia’s wrist. The pistol fell. Agents rushed in and secured her.The phone continued showing the Vesper screen. The override remained refused. The final transfer had not occurred.Celia was handcuffed when she looked at me.“The money will still be taken from you,” she said.“No.”“Your father’s condition disqualifies you. You knew about the fraud and continued using the accounts.”“I preserved evidence and reported the crime.”“The trustee will decide.”“The trustee will read the logs.”Agent Cross approached. “The override log contains the coercion flag and the live video. It also records Celia’s admission.”For the first time, Celia looked afraid.Justice had not arrived with a speech or a perfect rescue. It had arrived as a line of code she could not erase.
