Chapter 17 - The Hearing of Names

By dawn, federal agents had recovered the server logs, but Celia remained missing. Tate was arrested at a motel near the airport. Helen was taken to a hospital. Gertrude gave a recorded statement and was released under supervision.Brandon was transferred from county jail to federal custody. The emergency hearing began at nine. The courtroom was crowded with reporters, lawyers, and shareholders from Northstar. The financial scandal had become public overnight. Every major news site carried a story about the attorney imprisoned in her own kitchen by her husband.I hated the headline. It made me sound like a victim.I was not ashamed of surviving, but survival was not the whole story. The federal magistrate, Judith Rowe, reviewed the petition. “The court has received evidence that the initial guardianship proceeding relied on fraudulent medical records and concealed financial conflicts.”The prosecutor’s replacement, Dana Holloway, stood. “The government moves to dissolve the temporary guardianship and appoint an independent trustee.”“Objection,” said Celia’s attorney.Celia was not present, but her attorney claimed she was cooperating with authorities.I nearly laughed.Holloway submitted the Vesper logs, the kitchen recording, the jail confession, and the archive upload. The courtroom watched as Brandon’s voice filled the room.I helped Celia forge the medical records. I opened the Vesper system from the house. I knew the oil would be there.Gertrude sat behind me, her face rigid. When the recording ended, the judge looked toward the defense table.“Where is Ms. Voss?”The attorney stood. “We have been unable to reach her.”“Then the court will assume she is evading service.”The next witness was Dr. Bell.He denied examining me.Holloway placed his signature beside the forged evaluation.“Is this your signature?”“It appears to be.”“Did you receive payment from Mayfield Services?”“I may have consulted for them.”“For psychiatric evaluations?”“I don’t recall.”Holloway displayed bank records. Bell’s face went gray.“Your Honor,” I said, rising. The judge nodded.“Dr. Bell, you wrote that I believed my father communicated with me through household appliances.”“I may have used clinical shorthand.”“You wrote that I described a financial trap as a supernatural force.”“I cannot comment on an old document.”“You were never in my house.”“I may have received information from family members.”“From Brandon?”He did not answer.“From Celia?”His attorney objected. The judge sustained, but the damage was done.I returned to my seat.Holloway called Gertrude. She walked to the witness stand slowly. Before answering, she looked at me.“Tell the court what happened in the kitchen,” Holloway said.“We locked Abigail inside.”“Why?”“To force her to sign control of the trust.”“Who planned it?”“Celia directed us. Brandon agreed. I agreed.”“Did you intend to injure Abigail?”Gertrude’s mouth tightened. “I intended to frighten her. The oil was meant to create evidence of dangerous behavior.”“Did you know the water had been shut off?”“Yes.”“Did you know the smoke detector had been disabled?”“Yes.”“Did you know Celia intended to use a private facility to hold Abigail?”“Yes.”Her testimony was clean, devastating, and terrible.“Why are you telling the truth now?” Holloway asked.Gertrude looked at me. “Because the lie had become more important than the person I claimed to protect.”The judge ordered the guardianship dissolved and appointed an independent trustee, a retired judge named Samuel Ortiz. He would control the trust until the financial review ended.“The court finds probable cause that the trust was targeted through fraud, coercion, and conspiracy,” Judge Rowe said. “The court further finds that Abigail Vale acted to preserve evidence and protect herself from unlawful confinement.”Outside the courtroom, reporters surrounded me.“Did your husband try to kill you?”“Will you divorce him?”“How much money did you inherit?”I kept walking until a reporter asked, “Do you blame your father?”I stopped.“My father made serious mistakes,” I said. “So did I. The difference is that I am going to stop pretending mistakes become harmless when families make them.”That quote appeared everywhere by noon.At three, Agent Cross called.“Celia has been seen at a private airfield in Alabama.”“Is she leaving?”“She is trying.”“Then why are you calling me?”“Because the token she took from the server is not just an access key. It contains the final beneficiary override.”“If she uses it?”“The reserve transfers to the foundation.”“Can we stop it?”“Only if someone with successor-beneficiary authority enters the override first.”“Me.”“You.”I looked at the courthouse doors.“Where is the airfield?”
