Chapter 9 - The Safe House

The first shot struck the apartment door.Peter dropped behind the sofa. Clara’s crutch clattered against the floor. Nina pulled her toward the kitchen while Agent Cho returned fire through the narrow hallway.“Back exit,” Peter shouted.“There isn’t one,” Elise said.“There is if you know the theater.”He kicked open a trapdoor beneath a rug. A ladder descended into darkness.Clara looked down. “You expect me to climb?”“I expect you to decide whether your leg hurts more than a bullet.”Another shot tore through the wall.Clara lowered herself onto the ladder. Pain blinded her, but Nina steadied her from below. They reached a basement filled with scenery flats, ropes, and broken seats. Peter came last, clutching his recorder.Agent Cho slammed the trapdoor shut as footsteps entered the apartment.“Who are they?” Clara whispered.“Not federal,” he said. They moved through a tunnel beneath the theater. The passage ended at an alley behind a bakery. A plain vehicle waited with its lights off. Agent Grant sat behind the wheel.By dawn, Peter was in protective custody.Clara returned to the hospital under a new security detail. Nina insisted that the investigators needed a formal statement. Clara gave them one from the bed, her hands folded around a cup of untouched tea.She described the foyer. She described Arthur’s cane. She described Julian kneeling with the pen. When she finished, Nina asked, “Are you certain about his involvement?”“I’m certain he knew his parents were coming. I’m certain he wanted the alarm disabled. I’m certain he watched.”“Those distinctions matter.”“Then write all of them down.”They did. That afternoon, Elise arrived with a banker’s box. She placed it beside Clara’s bed and locked the door.“What is that?” Clara asked.“The documents Julian never knew I kept.”Inside were printed emails, access logs, and a handwritten list of account numbers. Elise had preserved them in a locked cabinet at home, beneath tax records.“Why didn’t you give these to the investigators earlier?” Clara asked.“Because some of them implicate me.”Clara removed a page. It showed that Elise had approved two payments to Vela Consulting.“You signed these.”“Julian brought me emergency authorizations. He said the board had approved them.”“You didn’t verify.”“No.”“Why?”Elise’s expression turned brittle. “Because I was exhausted, because I wanted the company to survive, and because I had already made one mistake. People who make one mistake are often afraid that looking closely will reveal ten more.”Clara understood the confession. It was not an excuse, but it was honest.Nina opened a folder. “These records show Elise raised concerns before the largest transfers. They also show someone altered her permissions afterward.”“Who?”“Julian’s account.”Elise sat down.“He used my credentials,” she said.“Or someone used his,” Clara replied.Agent Cho entered with an update. “The people who attacked Peter were identified. One is a former security contractor for Vanguard. The other is tied to Wren Field.”“Are they arrested?”“One is. The other ran.”Clara looked at the dark window. “They knew exactly where Peter lived.”“His address was in an old employee file,” Cho said.“So they had access to personnel records too.”He nodded. “We’re checking every system.”The hospital phone rang.Nina answered. Her face changed as she listened.“Who is this?” she asked. She covered the receiver. “It’s the clinic where you first received treatment.”Clara’s stomach tightened.Nina returned to the call. “What do you mean the file was requested?”The speaker on the other end kept talking.“By whom?”Nina wrote a name on a notepad.Julian Mercer. He had requested Clara’s medical records the morning after the attack, using a company authorization code. The request had been denied, but the attempt proved he was searching for her location.Clara felt fear move through her like cold water.“He’s looking for me,” she said.Agent Cho took the note.“Then we make sure he keeps looking,” Nina said.Clara glanced at the banker’s box. The truth was no longer hidden in a safe house or a server. It was spreading through courts, investigators, employees, and frightened witnesses.Julian had built his life on Clara believing that he could protect her.Now she would show him what protection actually looked like.
