Chapter 15 - The Altered File

The evidence failed in the middle of the night.Agent Cho called Nina at 2:17 a.m. A forensic copy of the Lantern archive contained altered timestamps. One file appeared to have been created after the attack, even though Clara remembered seeing it months earlier.“Someone changed the archive,” Nina said.Clara sat upright in the hospital bed. “From where?”“We don’t know.”“Who had access?”“You, Peter, Elise, and anyone who obtained the administrator key.”Elise arrived before sunrise. She wore the same gray suit, but her face looked hollow. Cho placed the altered file on a monitor. It showed a payment from Wren Field to a company called Vale Meridian. The beneficiary information had been edited to point toward an account controlled by Clara’s late father.“That is false,” Elise said.“How do you know?” Cho asked.“Because I created the original vendor table. Vale Meridian never existed.”“Could you have altered the file?”Elise stared at him. “Yes.”Clara felt a familiar betrayal opening beneath her ribs.“Did you?”Elise turned toward her. “No.”“You altered records before.”“Under pressure.”“And now?”“Now I am telling the truth.”The investigators searched Elise’s home and found an encrypted drive hidden inside her son’s old medical equipment. It contained copies of the board complaint, access logs, and one missing piece of the Lantern. They also found a program capable of changing timestamps.Elise sat in an interview room for six hours.Clara wanted to believe her. Nina warned that belief was not evidence.Near midnight, Elise asked to speak with Clara alone.“I wrote the program,” Elise admitted.Clara said nothing.“Years ago. It was designed to correct accounting errors in imported files. Julian learned about it and asked me to use it on two vendor records.”“Did you?”“Yes.”“What did you change?”“The timestamps. I made it appear that the invoices had been approved before the board meeting.”Clara’s hands curled around the blanket.“You helped them.”“I helped Julian hide two transfers. I did not know about the larger scheme.”“You should have told me.”“I know.”“Why didn’t you?”Elise’s eyes filled. “Because Julian sent me a photograph of my son outside his clinic. He said Arthur had people everywhere. I was afraid they would interrupt his treatment.”“Fear again.”“Yes.”“Fear does not make a person innocent.”“No. It makes a person responsible for the choices fear leaves behind.”Clara looked at her for a long moment.“What else?”Elise took a breath. “The altered Lantern file was not created by me. It was designed to frame your father and discredit you. Whoever made it knew the archive’s structure.”“Julian?”“Possibly. But the code was modified after the attack using a device registered to Rusk’s office.”Agent Cho confirmed it. The altered file had been inserted through a remote connection from a computer in Rusk’s conference room.Rusk had tried to redirect the fraud toward Clara’s inheritance.“Why?” Clara asked.Nina answered. “If the money appeared to originate from your father’s accounts, Rusk could claim the company’s corruption began before he became involved. He would present himself as the investor who discovered the problem.”The false file was not merely evidence tampering. It was a plan to rewrite history.Rusk’s attorneys filed a motion demanding that Clara’s inheritance records be released publicly. Nina opposed it, arguing that the request was intended to harass and intimidate. The judge allowed limited review under seal. For the first time, a court entered the story without a camera crew or family member controlling the room. The judge ordered the altered file preserved and prohibited either side from discussing sealed material publicly.Julian’s attorney withdrew from the case.Curtis Hall cited a conflict after learning that Rusk had separately paid a consulting fee to his firm.Julian was assigned new counsel. He looked older when he arrived for his next interview.“I didn’t alter the file,” he told Clara through a glass partition.“Did you know Rusk planned to?”He lowered his eyes.“Julian.”“He said he had a way to make the records look uncertain.”“And you said nothing.”“I thought he was bluffing.”“You always think that after the damage is done.”He pressed his palm to the glass.Clara did not touch it.The altered file had nearly succeeded because it resembled the truth. That was the most dangerous lie of all.
