Chapter 5 - Daniel Finally Sees Her FaceDaniel discovered the truth thirty-six hours before the ceremony.

Not because I told him.
Because Celeste made a mistake.
She had two phones.
Daniel knew about one.
The second was hidden inside a locked drawer in her office.
He found it while searching for their passports.
A message appeared on-screen before the phone relocked.
VICTOR: Once he signs after the ceremony, Margaret becomes irrelevant.
Daniel knew Uncle Victor.
He called me at 2:13 a.m.
“Mom.”
His voice sounded wrong.
“What happened?”
“Come to Celeste’s apartment.”
I arrived with Arthur.
Daniel sat in the living room.
Celeste was gone.
The second phone lay on the table.
He had guessed the passcode.
Their wedding date.
Irony can be cruel.
Messages went back two years.
Celeste to Victor:
He needs admiration more than intelligence. Easy.
Another:
Margaret is the problem. He still respects her even when he complains about her.
Richard:
Separate them.
Celeste:
Already working.
Then one from six weeks earlier:
After marriage I trigger the guarantee. Debt converts. Daniel keeps the title until we finish.
Daniel read that line repeatedly.
His face looked empty.
I sat beside him.
He whispered:
“She never loved me.”
I did not answer.
“I was a target.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“You tried to tell me.”
“Yes.”
“I called you jealous.”
“Yes.”
“Why aren’t you saying I told you so?”
I almost laughed.
“Because I’m your mother.”
Then his face collapsed.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
A man realizing that the person he built his future around had studied his weaknesses like a balance sheet.
After several minutes, Daniel asked:
“What happens now?”
Arthur answered:
“We can cancel the wedding.”
Daniel looked at me.
I said:
“Your decision.”
He stared at Celeste’s phone.
Then:
“No.”
Arthur frowned.
“No?”
Daniel stood.
“The wedding continues.”
Now I understood.
My son finally looked like a Hale executive again.
Not because he was angry.
Because he was thinking.
“If we cancel tonight, Victor runs.”
Arthur slowly smiled.
Daniel continued.
“Richard destroys evidence.”
“And Celeste knows we discovered her.”
He looked at me.
“Let them believe I’m still obsessed.”
For the first time in weeks, I smiled.
“Can you do that?”
May you like
Daniel’s face hardened.
“She taught me how.”
