Chapter 9 - Emma's Hair

Two years passed.

Emma's hair grew long again.

On her tenth birthday, Mariana braided it.

Emma chose a lavender bow.

The same color she had wanted years earlier.

When she walked downstairs, I nearly cried.

She looked happy.

Confident.

Free.

Then the doorbell rang.

Brenda stood outside.

She held a gift.

Emma looked at me.

I nodded.

She opened the door.

Brenda handed her a box.

Inside was a beautiful lavender hair ribbon.

Emma smiled.

“Thank you.”

Brenda's eyes filled with tears.

“Happy birthday.”

Emma hugged her.

It was brief.

But genuine.

I watched from the hallway.

Sometimes healing didn't look dramatic.

May you like

Sometimes it was just a child choosing not to carry an adult's mistake forever.
