Chapter 7 - The Apology
Months later, Brenda asked to see Emma.
I refused at first.
Then Emma surprised me.
“I want to hear her say sorry.”
So we met at a café.
Brenda sat across from Emma.
She looked nervous.
“I owe you an apology.”
Emma stared at her.
“For what?”
Brenda swallowed.
“For hurting you.”
Emma touched her hair.
“And for this?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you do it?”
Brenda's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was angry at your dad.”
Emma frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“No.”
Brenda wiped her face.
“It doesn't.”
Emma thought for a moment.
Then asked:
“Will you do it again?”
Brenda shook her head.
“Never.”
Emma looked at me.
I didn't speak.
Finally, she nodded.
“Okay.”
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
