She did not attempt to claim the shove was accidental.
That surprised Emily.
During sentencing, Vanessa looked toward her.
“I thought you were invisible.”
Emily held her gaze.
Vanessa continued.
“That made what I did easier.”
No apology can erase an act.
But accuracy matters.
Vanessa said:
“My father taught me that employees were moving pieces.”
Then she stopped.
“No.”
She corrected herself.
“He taught me that.”
“I chose to believe it.”
Adrian noticed Emily’s expression change.
Not forgiveness.
Recognition of responsibility.
Arthur Carlisle received a far longer sentence after conviction on major financial and conspiracy charges.
Carlisle Financial was broken apart.
Some divisions sold.
Others closed.
Hundreds of legitimate employees kept jobs under new ownership.
Adrian insisted on that.
Destroying Arthur did not require destroying innocent workers.
The Moretti-Carlisle alliance vanished.
