Chapter 1 - The Blood on the MirrorThe first thing Adrian Moretti saw was blood on the mirror.

Not much.
A dark streak across the bronze frame.
A few drops on the polished marble floor.
But enough.
Enough to make every conversation inside the mansion stop.
Enough to bring armed security running toward the second-floor east corridor.
Enough to make three-year-old Lucy Bennett stand barefoot outside Adrian’s bedroom at twelve seventeen in the morning, tears running silently down her cheeks.
“Mr. Adrian…”
He had opened the door expecting a nightmare.
A glass of water.
Perhaps a lost stuffed animal.
Instead Lucy pointed down the hallway.
“Mommy fell.”
Adrian followed her.
Then stopped.
Emily Bennett lay beneath the shattered mirror.
Her right wrist bent strangely beneath her.
Blood ran from a cut above her eyebrow.
One shoe was missing.
Several dark-blue folders lay scattered across the floor.
And standing ten feet away—
was Vanessa Carlisle.
Adrian’s fiancée.
Vanessa wore an ivory silk nightgown.
Perfect hair.
Barely a mark on her.
She looked at Emily.
Then at Adrian.
“She slipped.”
Adrian said nothing.
Lucy grabbed his hand.
“The pretty lady pushed Mommy.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
He saw everything.
“Lucy is frightened,” Vanessa said quickly. “She doesn’t understand what happened.”
Adrian crouched beside Emily.
“Emily?”
No response.
He touched her neck.
Pulse.
Weak, but steady.
“Michael!”
His security chief appeared almost immediately.
“Call an ambulance.”
“Already moving.”
“Lock the estate.”
Vanessa stared.
“What?”
“No one leaves.”
“Adrian, don’t be absurd.”
He looked at her.
The temperature in the hallway seemed to drop.
“I said no one leaves.”
Paramedics arrived eleven minutes later.
Emily was stabilized.
Concussion suspected.
Fractured wrist.
Possible rib injury.
As they placed her onto a stretcher, Lucy refused to release her mother’s sleeve.
Adrian knelt.
“They’re taking Mommy to the hospital.”
“Is she coming back?”
“Yes.”
The answer came automatically.
He had no idea whether it was true.
But Lucy needed it to be.
She finally let go.
Then whispered:
“Mommy found papers.”
Adrian froze.
“What papers?”
“The dark ones.”
“Where?”
“Under the rug.”
Michael looked at Adrian.
The private library.
There were only a handful of documents inside that room that Emily should never have seen.
Not because she had done anything wrong.
Because Adrian’s empire contained things ordinary employees were deliberately protected from knowing.
Shipping routes.
Private contracts.
Old Moretti agreements.
Business that existed in the spaces between legitimate logistics and the family’s darker history.
Adrian looked toward the blue folders scattered near the mirror.
Then Vanessa.
“What were you doing in my library?”
She folded her arms.
“Sleeping, actually.”
“Lucy says otherwise.”
“You’re taking the word of a toddler?”
“She led me to her bleeding mother.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“Be careful, Adrian.”
That tone.
For eighteen months, he had mistaken it for confidence.
Tonight it sounded like warning.
The ambulance left.
Michael approached holding an encrypted tablet.
“We have another problem.”
“What?”
“East-wing cameras went dark at eleven forty-five.”
“Technical failure?”
“No.”
Michael shook his head.
“Physical disconnect inside security control.”
Adrian stared.
Only four people had access.
Him.
Michael.
Security supervisor Harris.
And—
Vanessa.
Because six months earlier, Adrian had granted his future wife expanded access to prepare for the marriage.
A gesture of trust.
A mistake, perhaps.
Adrian looked toward the guest suite.
“Put Vanessa there.”
Michael nodded.
“And the folders?”
“Secure them.”
Lucy tugged Adrian’s hand.
He looked down.
She whispered:
“The pretty lady said Mommy had to disappear.”
Every muscle in his body went still.
“Exactly what did she say?”
Lucy sniffled.
“She said if Mommy told you…”
The child struggled to remember.
“…me and Mommy would go away forever.”
Michael slowly looked toward Adrian.
Adrian’s face showed nothing.
That frightened Michael more than anger would have.
“Take Lucy to Mrs. Hale.”
“What about you?”
Adrian looked toward Vanessa’s closed door.
“I’m going to ask my fiancée why she threatened a three-year-old child.”
And for the first time since the Moretti-Carlisle wedding had been announced—
Adrian hoped Vanessa would lie.
May you like
Because if she told the truth—
the entire alliance was already dead.
