Chapter 5 - The Secret Adrian Had Hidden TooEmily recovered slowly.

Three weeks after the attack, she returned to the estate.
Not as a housekeeper.
Adrian offered her paid medical leave.
She refused to sit idle.
So he moved her temporarily into administrative support under Mrs. Hale.
Emily discovered she was good at logistics.
Very good.
Within a month, she noticed irregular food-delivery invoices Mrs. Hale had missed.
Then caught duplicate maintenance payments.
Michael joked:
“We’ve been looking for spies, and apparently the real threat is Emily with a spreadsheet.”
Emily laughed.
Adrian did too.
But beneath the lighter days sat something heavier.
Emily had seen the manifests.
She never asked what they meant.
That troubled Adrian more than questions would have.
One evening, he finally approached her.
“You know those documents weren’t standard shipping records.”
“Yes.”
“You never asked.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Emily looked at him.
“Would you tell me?”
He considered lying.
Then:
“Probably not.”
“So why ask?”
Fair.
Adrian sat across from her.
“My family’s business wasn’t always legal.”
Emily said nothing.
“My father built Moretti Logistics from older operations.”
“Some routes remain… complicated.”
She stared.
“Are you telling me you’re a criminal?”
“That depends on which year and which attorney you ask.”
She did not smile.
Adrian continued.
“I’ve spent ten years trying to move the company out of that world.”
“Trying?”
“Yes.”
“Not finished?”
“No.”
There it was.
No heroic fantasy.
No pretending Adrian Moretti was innocent because Vanessa was worse.
Emily stood.
“I need to think.”
He nodded.
“You should.”
“I have Lucy.”
“I know.”
“If being near you means danger—”
“You leave.”
She looked surprised.
“That easy?”
“No.”
His voice became quieter.
“But necessary.”
Emily left the room.
Adrian did not stop her.
That night he made a decision.
The Lake Michigan routes would be closed.
Not because Emily demanded it.
May you like
She hadn’t.
Because seeing Lucy asleep in a hospital armchair had finally made the cost of “complicated business” impossible to abstract.
