Chapter 7 - THE ATTORNEY WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

David Hale had represented the Vance family for fifteen years.
He had handled property purchases.
Trusts.
Corporate acquisitions.
Even Clara's inheritance paperwork.
When he walked into the dark office, Clara immediately understood why the hidden account had been so carefully constructed.
He knew everything.
David smiled.
“You shouldn't have come here.”
Richard stepped forward.
“You created the offshore account.”
David didn't deny it.
“Yes.”
“You used Clara's identity.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Jonathan needed protection.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“You helped him.”
“I helped myself.”
Clara stared at him.
“Who is Mara Bell?”
David smiled.
“A name your father created.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Richard looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
David opened another file.
“Your grandfather had a private trust.”
“Most of the family never knew it existed.”
“It was designed to protect certain assets from the rest of the family.”
Clara frowned.
“And Mara Bell?”
David replied:
“She was supposed to be the anonymous beneficiary.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather knew the family would eventually fight over the estate.”
Clara's mind raced.
“If I was supposed to be protected…”
“Then why use my identity?”
“Because the trust was eventually merged into your inheritance.”
“And Jonathan discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“Then he wanted to steal it.”
“Yes.”
David took a breath.
“But Jonathan wasn't the only person who knew.”
Richard stared at him.
“Who else?”
David smiled.
“Your brother.”
Richard froze.
“My brother is dead.”
“No.”
“He died twenty years ago.”
David shook his head.
“Another false death.”
Clara felt another wave of disbelief.
“How many people in this family are supposedly dead?”
David looked at her.
“Too many.”
The room went silent.
Richard sat down.
“My brother's name?”
David hesitated.
“Edward.”
Clara had never heard the name.
Richard had once told her he was an only child.
Apparently, that had been another lie.
“Where is Edward?”
“He lives under another identity.”
“Which?”
David looked at Clara.
“Mara Bell.”
Clara stared.
“That was my name in the trust.”
“Yes.”
“Then Edward has been using my identity.”
“Not exactly.”
David explained.
The original trust had been created around two identities.
One for Edward.
One for his future descendants.
When Richard inherited the family company, the documents were hidden.
Edward was supposed to disappear.
Instead, he created a network of shell companies.
Jonathan eventually discovered it.
Evelyn became involved.
And David became the lawyer connecting them all.
Clara looked at Richard.
“Your family is unbelievable.”
Richard sighed.
“I agree.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
David looked toward the door.
His expression changed.
“He's here.”
“Who?”
Edward entered.
Older.
Gray hair.
Cold eyes.
He looked directly at Richard.
“You should have left the family alone.”
Richard stood.
“You've been alive all these years.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you took everything.”
“I built it.”
“You stole it.”
Clara stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Both men looked at her.
Edward smiled.
“So this is Clara.”
“You've been using my name.”
“I have been using the family's protection.”
“You almost destroyed me.”
“No.”
“I protected myself.”
Clara laughed bitterly.
“By framing me?”
Edward didn't answer.
That was all the confirmation she needed.
She pulled out her phone.
The federal investigators had already been contacted.
Edward noticed.
“You think they can protect you?”
Clara smiled.
“I don't need them to protect me.”
She held up the phone.
“They just need to hear you confess.”
Edward's face changed.
David looked at him.
“She's recorded everything.”
Edward stepped backward.
The police entered seconds later.
Edward was arrested.
David followed.
The hidden network finally began collapsing.
But after the arrests, Clara found one final letter in the lawyer's files.
It was from her late grandfather.
The first sentence made her stop.
Clara, if you are reading this, then your father failed to tell you the most important truth.
She continued.
You were never supposed to inherit the family fortune alone.
There was another beneficiary.
A person Clara had never heard of.
May you like
And beneath the name was a note:
Find her before the family does.
