Chapter 3 - OPEN THE BAG

The family attorney arrived twenty minutes later.
His name was Thomas Reed.
He had represented Richard for nearly twenty years and had witnessed countless family disputes.
But when he entered the room and saw the frozen expressions, he immediately understood this wasn't an ordinary argument.
“What happened?”
Richard handed him the bracelet.
“Found in my daughter's bag.”
Thomas examined it.
“Where is the bag?”
“On the table.”
Thomas looked toward Clara.
“Did you put the bracelet there?”
“No.”
“Did anyone ask you to carry it?”
“No.”
“Do you have any idea how it got there?”
“No.”
Thomas nodded.
Then he turned toward Evelyn.
“Mrs. Vance?”
“I already explained everything.”
“I'd like to hear it again.”
She looked annoyed.
“I found the bracelet in Clara's handbag.”
“Where?”
“In the bedroom.”
“Which bedroom?”
“My bedroom.”
“And why was Clara's handbag there?”
“I don't know.”
Clara immediately spoke.
“My bag was never in her room.”
Thomas looked at Richard.
Richard said nothing.
Thomas returned his attention to Evelyn.
“Was anyone else present?”
“No.”
“Did you touch the bag?”
“I moved it.”
“You testified earlier that you never touched it.”
Evelyn became silent.
Thomas glanced at Richard.
“I believe we should inspect the bag immediately.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Because if the bracelet was planted, there may be additional evidence.”
Richard nodded.
“Open it.”
Clara slowly placed the handbag on the table.
Thomas wore gloves.
He opened every compartment.
Wallet.
Keys.
Phone.
Lip balm.
A notebook.
Nothing.
Then he reached into the smallest interior pocket.
His fingers stopped.
“What is it?”
He removed a folded piece of paper.
Clara frowned.
“That isn't mine.”
Thomas unfolded it.
A handwritten note.
DON'T TELL DAD.
Clara's face drained of color.
“I didn't write that.”
Richard looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn's expression was unreadable.
Thomas examined the handwriting.
“It doesn't match Clara's.”
Richard asked:
“Whose is it?”
“We'll need an expert.”
Evelyn suddenly moved toward the paper.
“Let me see that.”
Richard stopped her.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I asked you not to touch anything.”
She pulled her hand back.
Thomas placed the note into an evidence sleeve.
Then he looked inside the handbag again.
A small metallic object fell onto the table.
A memory card.
Clara stared.
“What is that?”
Evelyn went completely still.
Richard noticed.
“Do you recognize it?”
“No.”
But the answer came too quickly.
Thomas looked at her.
“Mrs. Vance?”
“I don't know what it is.”
Richard picked up the memory card.
“Bring me a reader.”
Minutes later, the card was connected to a laptop.
A single folder appeared.
CLARA.
Richard opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Clara entering the house.
Clara walking into the library.
Clara eating dinner.
Clara crying.
Clara sleeping.
Hundreds of photographs.
Clara covered her mouth.
“Someone has been following me.”
Richard looked horrified.
“Who took these?”
Thomas shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Then a video opened automatically.
Evelyn appeared on screen.
Standing in the hallway.
Talking to someone.
Her face was hidden at first.
Then the camera angle changed.
A man's voice was heard.
“Once she is accused, Richard will never trust her again.”
Evelyn replied:
“She'll leave.”
“And the house?”
“Mine.”
“And the inheritance?”
“She'll lose it.”
Richard's face went completely still.
Clara looked at her stepmother.
“You planned everything.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
But the recording continued.
The man's face finally appeared.
It was Richard's brother.
Jonathan.
A man who had supposedly moved overseas fifteen years earlier.
Richard stared at the screen.
“Jonathan?”
Evelyn began crying.
“Richard, please—”
He turned toward her.
“How long?”
“I can explain.”
“How long have you been working with my brother?”
She said nothing.
Richard's voice became colder.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
Clara stepped backward.
Three years.
The entire time she had been living in that house.
Every humiliation.
Every accusation.
Every incident.
Had been planned.
But Jonathan wanted something bigger than revenge.
He wanted the Vance family inheritance.
And Clara was standing directly between him and it.
Richard closed the laptop.
“No one leaves this house.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Richard…”
He looked at her.
May you like
“I think we need to have a very different conversation now.”
