Chapter 7 - The Downfall of a Tyrant

The silence in the executive boardroom was deafening.
Caleb stared at the paused screen, his face turning an alarming shade of pale gray. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. The polished armor of corporate confidence had completely shattered.
"Caleb," Sterling said, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "We pride ourselves on integrity and ethical leadership at Apex Financial. Threatening an infant child, abusing your spouse, and using company time and equipment to launch petty cyber-harassment campaigns against your estranged family is a gross violation of our employee code of conduct."
"This is private business!" Caleb finally choked out, his voice cracking. "It has nothing to do with my financial performance!"
"Character is not compartmentalized, Caleb," the HR representative replied coldly, sliding a termination letter across the desk alongside the divorce papers he had received downstairs. "Effective immediately, your employment with Apex Financial is terminated for cause. Your company laptop, security badge, and parking privileges are revoked. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building."

Caleb looked at the papers, then at the hard, unyielding faces of the men he had tried to impress for years. He realized then that his entire life—his status, his career, his carefully curated image—had been built on a foundation of sand, and he had dug his own grave with every cruel word he uttered in the dark.
Without another word, Caleb turned and walked out of the boardroom, his head bowed, passing two security guards who silently escorted him down to the lobby and out onto the rainy sidewalk.
