Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Office

While Mia and Noah found their rhythm in the safety of the sunlit house, Caleb was fighting a very different battle across the city.

Stripped of his domestic domain where he played king, Caleb attempted to project total control at Apex Financial Group, his employer of six years. But professional success in high finance relies heavily on momentum, and Caleb’s momentum had flatlined.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Caleb sat in the glass-walled office of his senior division director, Arthur Sterling.

"Caleb, your quarterly report numbers are down twenty percent," Sterling said, tossing a printed analytics sheet across the mahogany desk. "And HR has flagged three separate complaints from junior associates regarding your volatile temperament during the recent portfolio merger."

Caleb forced a tight, confident smile, leaning forward in his chair. "Arthur, you know how demanding things have been. My wife recently had a child, and we've been navigating some minor domestic adjustments. It’s entirely temporary. My focus is back on the firm hundred percent."

Sterling narrowed his eyes, studying Caleb with a critical gaze. "Financial services require stability, Caleb. We're up for a major municipal contract next month, and the board is vetting every senior manager's personal background and stability. Make sure your house is in order—literally and figuratively. Rumors travel fast in this building."

The warning cut deep. Caleb walked back to his cubicle with his fists clenched inside his pockets. He blamed Mia. He blamed me. Most of all, he blamed the fact that his carefully constructed illusion of superiority was crumbling under the weight of reality.

That evening, instead of going home—since the smart locks and security cameras locked him out permanently—Caleb checked into a downtown business hotel. Sitting on the edge of the king-sized bed with a glass of scotch, he opened his laptop and began drafting a malicious plan. If he couldn't control Mia through the house, he would attack her through her professional credentials and her past.

He didn't know that my attorney had already anticipated his retaliation and placed a digital tripwire on his corporate IP address.
