Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

On a warm Sunday afternoon in early June, exactly one year after the night in the nursery, our backyard was filled with laughter, bright streamers, and the sweet scent of vanilla birthday cake.
Noah’s first birthday party was a modest, joyful celebration attended by close friends, supportive neighbors like Mrs. Higgins, and Arthur Vance, who arrived with a massive teddy bear and a warm smile.
Mia stood on the patio holding Noah as he curiously poked his chubby finger into his very own smash cake, sending blue frosting flying across the tray. Everyone laughed, clapping and cheering as the little boy giggled, completely unfazed by the mess he had made.
I stood a few feet away, leaning against the wooden railing, watching my daughter and grandson bathed in the golden afternoon sunlight. The tired, frightened young mother I had found kneeling in the dark nursery a year ago was entirely gone. In her place stood a confident, radiant woman who owned her home, her career, and her own destiny.
Mia caught my eye across the yard. She walked over, resting her head gently on my shoulder while Noah babbled happily in her arms, his small fingers clutching a fistful of blue frosting.
"Thank you, Mom," Mia whispered softly, her voice rich with enduring peace and profound gratitude. "For everything."

I smiled, kissing the top of my grandson's soft head and wrapping my arm tightly around my daughter.
"Always, my love," I murmured. "Always."
