Chapter 9 - Justice and Closure

Four years after the incident at the birthday banquet, the final chapter of the past officially closed.
Evelyn was released from prison on strict parole. Broken in health, bankrupt, and completely shunned by the social elite she had spent her life trying to impress, she moved into a small, state-subsidized retirement apartment on the far edge of the state. She tried once to send a letter to my business, asking for forgiveness and requesting to see Lily.
I read the letter carefully. It contained no real remorse—only complaints about her poor health and complaints about how difficult her life had become.
I did not reply. I filed the letter away with Victoria for legal documentation and kept our life moving forward without a single backward glance.
Mark remained living in obscurity. Unable to regain his accounting credentials, he worked low-level administrative jobs, living a lonely, quiet existence defined by the consequences of his cowardice. He had chosen to be a dutiful son to a tyrant instead of a loving father to his daughter, and he was left with neither.
One afternoon, I brought six-year-old Lily to the local park. She ran across the grass, her long dark hair streaming behind her, laughing joyfully as Leo chased her toward the playground swings.
David walked beside me, carrying two ice cream cones, wrapping an arm comfortably around my waist as we sat on a park bench under the shade of an oak tree.
Lily ran up to us, her cheeks rosy with health and joy, holding up a bright yellow dandelion she had picked from the grass.
"Look, Mommy! Look, David!" she beamed, holding the flower up proudly. "It's bright like the sun!"
David kneeled down, looking at her with genuine affection. "It's beautiful, Lily. Just like you."
Lily giggled, giving David a sudden, warm hug around his neck before turning back to me. "Mommy, can we go to the beach tomorrow with Leo?"
May you like
"Of course we can, sweetie," I smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
She kissed my cheek and bounded back toward the playground, full of energy, confidence, and unshakeable happiness.
