Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

Three months later, the legal hammer fell with full force.
The State Department of Revenue, working alongside federal investigators, issued a formal indictment against Evelyn Vance for felony tax evasion, corporate fraud, and grand larceny. The evidence provided by my forensic audit demonstrated that she had stolen over $3.2 million from her own businesses over a decade, shifting the tax liability onto Mark’s shell company.
Because Mark had signed the documents, he was named as a co-conspirator.
During his grand jury deposition, broken, broke, and facing up to ten years in prison, Mark broke down completely. He turned state’s evidence against his mother, confessing that she had manipulated him into signing illegal financial filings under the threat of removing him from her will.
The criminal trial for child abuse proceeded swiftly as well. Facing overwhelming video evidence, medical documentation, and the testimony of several restaurant staff members who witnessed the event, Evelyn was convicted of third-degree felony child abuse and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
On the day of her sentencing, I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding my head high.
Evelyn stood at the defense table in a drab orange jumpsuit, her designer clothes and posture completely gone. Her hair was unstyled, her face pale and drawn.
"Your behavior was not only criminal, Mrs. Vance," the judge said coldly from the bench. "It displayed an astonishing lack of human decency toward an innocent child. Your complete lack of remorse throughout these proceedings convinces this court that a deterrent sentence is necessary."
The judge sentenced Evelyn to three years in state prison, followed by five years of strict probation, alongside mandatory restitution payments totaling over two million dollars.
Mark avoided prison time by pleading guilty to misprision of a felony and agreeing to cooperate fully with the liquidators. However, his professional licenses were permanently revoked, his bank accounts were wiped out by restitution fees, and he was sentenced to two years of house arrest and community service.

As Evelyn was led away in handcuffs, she passed my seat. For the first time, her cold, arrogant gaze broke. She looked at me with a mixture of terror and defeat.
I didn't glare back. I simply looked at her with serene indifference. She was no longer a threat. She was just a bitter memory.
