Chapter 4 - The Financial Avalanche

Within forty-eight hours of serving the restraining orders, the financial dominoes began to fall.
Evelyn believed her wealth made her untouchable, but her power relied entirely on secrecy. She had spent decades shifting profits through shell companies, underreporting rental income, and coercing small vendors into unrecorded cash transactions. When I submitted my forensic auditing report to the State Department of Revenue and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, I didn't just give them accusations—I gave them account numbers, wire transaction receipts, and digital footings.
On Thursday morning, six federal agents and state tax investigators arrived at Evelyn’s headquarters with a sweeping search warrant. They seized hard drives, physical ledgers, and locked down all associated corporate bank accounts.
Mark called me seven times from a burner phone, ignoring the legal risks. When I finally routed the call through Victoria’s office recorder, his voice was laced with hysterical panic.
"Sarah, what did you do?!" he screamed. "The bank froze the holding company’s payroll! My personal cards are being declined! Mom’s legal team says there’s a federal freeze on her primary accounts!"
"I told you, Mark," I replied, my tone icy and steady. "You chose to sign documents you didn't read to keep your mother happy. In the business world, ignorance isn't a defense. It's negligence."
"I didn't know she was hiding funds!" he sobbed. "I just signed where she pointed!"
"Then you can explain that to the grand jury," I said, and hung up.
Meanwhile, the court held an emergency hearing regarding temporary custody. Evelyn’s attorney tried to portray the incident at the restaurant as a "stress-induced family misunderstanding" and framed me as an unhinged, gold-digging wife trying to destroy an honorable family.
Victoria stood up, placed her hands on the podium, and played Clara’s video on the courtroom’s high-definition monitors.
The clear audio of Evelyn demanding my father’s land, calling my daughter "defective," and the sickening sound of her hand striking a two-year-old echoed through the quiet courtroom. The judge’s face grew visibly dark.
When the clip ended, the judge looked down over his glasses at Evelyn and her legal team.

"I have seen enough," the judge declared sternly. "Temporary sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance is granted exclusively to the mother, Sarah Vance. The defendant, Mark Vance, is granted supervised visitation once a week at a court-designated facility, contingent upon a full psychological evaluation. Evelyn Vance is under a strict, non-contact order. If she comes within one thousand feet of this child or the mother, she will be remanded to custody without bail."
Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls in dramatic fury, but the gavel struck with absolute finality.
