Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE THAT COULDN'T BE SAVED

Three months later, the Caldwell mansion went onto the market.

The family had no choice.

The mortgage was too large.

The companies were struggling.

Creditors were demanding payment.

The lifestyle that had seemed permanent disappeared piece by piece.

Victoria refused to leave.

She sat in the mansion surrounded by furniture she could no longer afford.

“This house belongs to the family.”

Marcus shook his head.

“The bank owns it.”

“No.”

“You've lost control.”

Victoria looked toward the portrait of her late husband.

“He would never have let this happen.”

Marcus laughed.

“Dad is dead.”

“He would have found a way.”

“Dad built the debt.”

“He built the company.”

“Exactly.”

Marcus packed his belongings.

“You should come with me.”

“Where?”

“A smaller apartment.”

Victoria looked offended.

“I will not live in an apartment.”

Marcus stared.

“Then where will you live?”

She had no answer.

Meanwhile, Daniel's new company was thriving.

Without the Caldwell family.

Without his mother's influence.

And without the debts attached to the old business.

Elena's father had offered him a position in the family investment firm.

Daniel accepted.

But he refused one condition.

“I want my own team.”

His father-in-law smiled.

“Then build it.”

Daniel did.

Within months, his new division began recovering.

Elena returned to work remotely.

She wanted independence.

Not because she didn't trust Daniel.

Because she wanted to know she could stand on her own.

One evening, Daniel came home with a file.

“What is it?”

“The mansion.”

Elena stared.

“What about it?”

“My mother can't sell it privately.”

“Why?”

“Because of the debt.”

He handed her the document.

“She wants me to buy it.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I don't want that house.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then let the bank take it.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is what we're doing.”

The house was eventually sold.

A developer purchased it.

The ballroom was demolished.

The dining room disappeared.

The terrace where Elena had been humiliated was rebuilt.

The family name was removed from the gate.

Victoria moved into a modest apartment.

For the first time, she lived without staff.

She had to cook.

Clean.

Pay bills.

Learn what everything cost.

She hated it.

But she also began to understand.

May you like

Money had protected her from consequences for decades.

Now consequences were finally arriving.
