Chapter 10 - THE HOME WE CHOSE

One year later, Elena and Daniel moved into a small house outside Manhattan.

No mansion.
No staff.
No marble halls.
Just a garden.
A kitchen.
A porch.
And a nursery for their first child.
Daniel stood beside Elena one evening.
“You happy?”
She smiled.
“For the first time.”
He touched her stomach.
The baby kicked.
He laughed.
“Did you feel that?”
“Yes.”
“It really is happening.”
Elena smiled.
“Our family is beginning again.”
Behind them, Amelia was visiting with Elena's parents.
Victoria came occasionally.
Quietly.
She never demanded anything anymore.
One afternoon, Elena found her in the garden.
Victoria was holding a small wooden toy.
“Who gave you that?”
“Your husband.”
“For the baby?”
Victoria nodded.
“I didn't know what else to buy.”
Elena smiled.
“It's beautiful.”
Victoria looked down.
“I used to think love was ownership.”
Elena said nothing.
“I thought if I controlled everything, I could protect everyone.”
“You hurt people.”
“I know.”
“Do you regret it?”
Victoria's eyes filled.
“Every day.”
Elena nodded.
“Then learn from it.”
Victoria looked surprised.
“You don't hate me?”
“I hate what you did.”
“But not you.”
Victoria started crying.
Elena walked away.
She didn't hug her.
Not yet.
But she left the door open.
That was enough.
Months later, the baby was born.
A healthy boy.
Daniel cried when he first held him.
Elena smiled.
Her family gathered around the hospital room.
Her mother.
Her father.
Amelia.
Even Victoria.
The family that had once been divided by money now stood together because they had finally learned what money couldn't buy.
A mother couldn't buy back lost years.
A husband couldn't buy forgiveness.
A billionaire couldn't buy love.
And a family couldn't buy belonging.
Those things had to be earned.
Elena looked at her son.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Amelia.
She smiled.
The empire was gone.
But something better had taken its place.
A family.
Not perfect.
Not wealthy beyond reason.
Just honest.
May you like
And finally free.
