Chapter 3 - THE MONEY STOPS

The first crisis arrived forty-eight hours later.
Victoria woke to seven unanswered calls from the bank.
She assumed it was a technical problem.
Then her private banker called personally.
“Mrs. Caldwell, the account has been frozen.”
“What?”
“The line of credit has been suspended.”
“Why?”
“The guarantee has been withdrawn.”
Victoria's face went pale.
“What guarantee?”
“Elena Vance's family guarantee.”
The phone nearly fell from her hand.
She called Daniel.
No answer.
She called Elena.
Blocked.
She called Marcus.
His voice was nervous.
“Mom.”
“What happened?”
“The bank called me.”
“What did they say?”
“They're recalling the loan.”
“How much?”
“Everything.”
Victoria sat down.
The mansion suddenly felt much larger.
And much colder.
Within a week:
The household staff resigned.
The private chef left.
The chauffeur's contract expired.
The gardeners were dismissed.
The family's luxury credit cards stopped working.
The company accounts were reviewed.
Their biggest supplier demanded payment upfront.
A private bank refused to extend another loan.
Victoria called the family accountant.
“Fix it.”
He shook his head.
“There is nothing I can do.”
“Then find a way.”
“We've already used the emergency reserve.”
“Who approved that?”
Silence.
Victoria knew.
Daniel.
Before leaving, he had withdrawn his personal guarantees from the family businesses.
Without those guarantees, the banks no longer trusted the company.
Marcus arrived at the mansion carrying a stack of bills.
“We have a problem.”
Victoria snapped:
“I know.”
“No.”
He placed the bills on the table.
“We have a serious problem.”
“What now?”
“The mortgage is three months behind.”
Victoria stared.
“This house is worth twenty million.”
“It doesn't matter.”
“We can sell something.”
“The assets are frozen.”
She looked at him.
“What about Elena's family?”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“She isn't coming back.”
Victoria stood.
“She will.”
She drove to Daniel's new apartment.
When the door opened, Elena stood behind him.
Victoria looked at them.
“You've gone too far.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“You're bankrupting your own family.”
Daniel looked at her.
“My family was bankrupt long before I left.”
Elena stepped forward.
“I didn't want this.”
Victoria laughed.
“Of course you didn't.”
“You wanted everything.”
“No.”
“I wanted respect.”
Victoria had no answer.
Daniel closed the door.
Victoria stood outside.
May you like
For the first time in her life, she was the one standing outside someone else's home.
And the humiliation cut deeply.
