Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Accomplice
The investigation didn't stop with Patricia. Detective Marcus Vance dug deeper into her financial records, uncovering a web of deceit that spanned years. Patricia hadn't acted entirely alone; she had a co-conspirator inside the local medical examiner's office who had helped falsify Sarah’s initial death certificate.
Dr. Richard Evans, a balding, nervous man in his late fifties, was brought in for questioning two weeks after Patricia's arrest. Facing twenty years in federal prison for obstruction of justice and accessory to murder, Evans broke down within twenty minutes of interrogation.
"She manipulated me!" Evans sobbed across the stainless-steel interrogation table. "Patricia threatened to expose my gambling debts and ruin my career if I didn't sign off on the stroke diagnosis. I didn't know she was going to kill anyone else. She promised it was just a painless way out for Sarah because Sarah was supposedly 'unhappy'!"
Marcus Vance brought the interrogation transcripts to my office at Thorne Enterprises.
"She was methodical," Marcus said, laying the file on my desk. "Patricia planned this for over a year. She targeted your family, isolated Sarah from her other friends, and positioned herself as the savior so you would marry her afterward. It’s textbook psychopathy."
I closed the file, feeling a cold fury wash over me, followed immediately by a profound sense of closure. The monsters were being exposed. The light was finally piercing through the shadows of the estate.

"What happens next?" I asked.
"Trial date is set for winter," Marcus replied, standing up and buttoning his coat. "With Evans' testimony and your audio recording, it’s an open-and-shut case. She’ll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison."
