Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

The sun dipped entirely below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the shoreline as we walked back toward the cottage. The windows glowed with a welcoming, amber light, spilling out onto the porch where fresh flowers sat in a vase by the front door.

Inside, the house smelled of warm cinnamon and home-cooked dinner—a far cry from the cold, sterile luxury of the Thorne estate, and worlds away from the dark pantry where our nightmare had nearly ended.

We sat down together at the wooden dining table, the three of us hand in hand.

"Can we have pancakes for dinner, Daddy?" Lucas asked, his big eyes wide with hopeful anticipation.

I laughed, feeling a lightness in my chest that I hadn't felt in years. "Pancakes it is, buddy. Breakfast for dinner."

Ava cheered, clapping her hands, and for the first time in a very long time, the house echoed with pure, unadulterated, carefree laughter.

We had walked through the valley of shadow and deceit, but love, truth, and resilience had brought us out into the light. The scars remained, but they were proof of our survival—proof that no matter how dark the night might seem, dawn always breaks for those who refuse to let go of hope.

And as I looked at my children, safe, loved, and smiling, I knew our story didn't end in tragedy. It was just the beginning of our happily ever after.
