Claire hated every second of it.
Reporters waited outside her apartment.

Victoria disappeared.
For two days, she did not answer any calls.
Then Samuel discovered that she had requested a private meeting with the board.
Claire felt betrayed.
“She’s trying to protect the company.”
Samuel said nothing.

“After everything that happened, she’s going to fight me too?”
The next morning, Claire went to Whitmore Tower.
She walked straight into the meeting room.
Victoria was standing before the shareholders.
“You’re late,” she said.
Claire looked at her coldly.
“For what?”
Victoria handed her a document.
Claire began reading.
It was not a lawsuit.
It was a resolution.
Victoria had requested that all of Charles’s voting rights be suspended.
She had also proposed provisionally recognizing Claire’s 31 percent ownership until the court confirmed the will.
Claire looked up.
“I thought…”
“You thought I was going to betray you.”
Victoria gave a faint smile.
“I would have thought the same thing.”
Claire lowered the document.
“Why are you doing this?”
Victoria looked at the old portrait of Eleanor hanging in the room.
“Because someone in this family has to finish what our grandmother started.”
For the first time, the two women understood that they did not have to be enemies.
