Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be DeadThomas Hale was alive.

He was eighty-three years old and lived in a small lakeside house three hours from New York City.

Claire, Victoria, and Samuel traveled there.

When Thomas opened the door and saw Claire, he froze.

“Rose.”

“I’m her granddaughter.”

The old man slowly closed his eyes.

“I knew someday you would come.”

He invited them inside.

In a safe, he kept files he had preserved for more than five decades.

“I worked for Richard Whitmore,” he explained. “And I’m ashamed of many things.”

Thomas revealed that in 1961 he had been ordered to find Rose Morgan.

But when he found her, Rose was holding baby Sarah in her arms.

“She didn’t look like a threat. She looked like a terrified mother.”

Richard demanded the necklace back.

Rose refused.

So they threatened to falsely accuse Daniel Morgan of theft.

Rose surrendered the jewel to protect him.

Claire clenched her fists.

“My grandmother was extorted?”

“Yes.”

Thomas handed over a photograph.

It showed Richard Whitmore receiving the necklace directly from Rose.

Thomas himself was standing behind them.

“I kept this as insurance.”

But there was more.

Thomas had recorded several conversations.

In one, Richard admitted Rose had never legally surrendered her family rights.

In another, he talked about destroying documents.

Victoria covered her mouth.

“My grandfather did all this.”

Thomas looked at her.

“And someone else continued it.”

He removed a newer envelope.

Date: 2018.

It was a letter signed by Charles Whitmore.

In it, Charles asked Thomas to surrender every file related to Rose.

In exchange, he would receive five hundred thousand dollars.

Claire felt rage rise inside her.

“He knew everything.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

Victoria stood.

Her father had not merely discovered the truth.

He had tried to bury it again.

But Thomas was not finished.

“There is something you need to know about Sarah.”

Claire froze.

“My mother?”

“Eleanor found her.”

“When?”

“In 2004.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Thomas explained that Eleanor had secretly traveled to meet Sarah.

They spent two days together.

Eleanor told her the entire truth.

Claire shook her head.

“That’s impossible. My mother never said anything.”

Thomas pulled out another letter.

“Because Sarah chose not to claim the money.”

Claire opened it.

It was written in her mother’s handwriting.

I don’t want Claire growing up surrounded by people who measure love in shares and inheritances.

But someday she should know the truth.

Claire began to cry.

Her mother had known who she was.

And she had chosen silence.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Claire…”

“No.”

Claire backed away.

“My whole life, I thought my mother had no one.”

She looked at the documents.

“While your family had houses, companies, parties… she worked double shifts taking care of patients.”

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“I didn’t know she existed either.”

Claire wanted to hate her.

But she could see that Victoria had also just discovered that much of her life had been built on a lie.

Then Samuel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” Victoria asked.

Samuel put away the phone.

“Charles just called an emergency board meeting.”

“For what?”

“He wants to sell a significant portion of the family shares.”

Claire understood immediately.

“He’s trying to move the money before we can claim it.”

May you like

Samuel nodded.

“We have less than twenty-four hours.”
