Chapter 9 - Healing and Horizons

The transition from a survivor of abuse to the head of a global foundation wasn't easy, but every step forward felt like shedding an old, heavy skin. Six months after taking control of Montgomery Global—now officially renamed and rebranded as Vance-Montgomery Bio-Research—the corporate restructuring was complete, and the company had become a beacon of ethical medical innovation and patient advocacy.
I sat at the mahogany desk in my new corner office on the fiftieth floor, reviewing the quarterly philanthropic grants we were awarding to underprivileged medical students and organ donor support networks.
My phone buzzed gently against the polished wood surface. It was a text message from Dr. Miller at the hospital: “Routine post-op checkup results are in, Victoria. Your renal panels are completely normal, and your body has fully adapted. You're in peak health.”
I smiled, letting out a soft sigh of relief. My body was healing. My mind was healing. And my life was entirely my own.
Later that afternoon, Julian dropped by my office with a thick manila envelope bearing the logo of the state family court services.
"What's this?" I asked, looking up as he set it on my desk.
"Final probate settlement and asset distribution," Julian replied, pulling up a chair and sitting down with a satisfied grin. "The last of the Montgomery real estate holdings have been liquidated. After paying off all federal restitution funds, back taxes, and establishing the Vance Medical Foundation, the remaining trust accounts have been fully cleared into your sole name."
I opened the envelope, scanning the final figures. It was an astronomical sum of money—wealth beyond imagination. But looking at the numbers, I didn't feel the cold greed that had consumed Charles Montgomery. I felt a profound sense of responsibility.
"What about Brenda and Alyssa?" I asked quietly, looking up at my uncle.
Julian’s expression softened. "They're still living in that modest apartment across town. Brenda picked up a part-time job at a local community center, and Alyssa has been attending her post-transplant physical therapy sessions at the public clinic. Without the luxury, without the servants, and without the stolen fortune... they're finally learning how to live like ordinary people. They didn't reach out, and they know better than to try."
I nodded slowly, folding the papers back into the envelope. I didn't wish them further harm, nor did I ever want them in my life again. They were ghosts of a chapter that was firmly closed.
"Good," I said softly. "Let's close the file for good."
Julian stood up, patting my shoulder affectionately. "There's a charity gala downstairs in the grand ballroom tonight, Victoria. Half the city's medical leaders, philanthropists, and innovators are coming to meet the new chairwoman. Are you ready to make your grand public address?"
May you like
I stood up from my desk, smoothing the fabric of my tailored blazer, and looked out the massive glass window toward the bright, endless horizon of the city skyline.
"I've been ready my entire life," I said.
