Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Montgomery

Two weeks after I took control of Montgomery Global Pharmaceuticals, the corporate restructuring was moving forward with the speed and precision of a surgical blade. The forensic audit ordered on my first day had already uncovered a sprawling web of corporate embezzlement, offshore accounts, tax evasion, and intellectual property theft orchestrated by Charles Montgomery and his inner circle.

Federal investigators moved from office to office, hauling away filing cabinets, seizing hard drives, and serving indictments to half of the executive board. The name "Montgomery" had gone from a symbol of elite corporate prestige to a toxic liability overnight.

Meanwhile, back at the hilltop mansion on the ridge, the final phase of the legal reclamation was underway.

I stood in the center of the grand foyer of the sprawling estate, watching as a team of federal bailiffs and estate liquidators systematically packed up Charles and Brenda’s belongings. The sprawling, marble-floored hallways that used to echo with their cold, condescending laughter were now filled with the dull clatter of cardboard moving boxes and packing tape.

Brenda sat huddled on a velvet sofa near the sweeping staircase, clutching a single designer handbag to her chest like a lifeline. Her eyes were hollow, red-rimmed, and devoid of the fierce, arrogant pride she had worn like armor for over twenty years. Standing a few feet away, leaning heavily against the banister, was Alyssa.

Without access to private concierge doctors, specialized post-transplant physical therapists, and unlimited financial backing, Alyssa looked frail and sickly. The diamond bracelet was gone, replaced by a simple hospital band she still wore on her wrist. The reality of their total ruin had finally broken her spirit.

As I walked across the marble foyer, my heels clicking sharply against the floor, Brenda looked up. For a split second, a flash of her old anger sparked in her eyes, but it was instantly swallowed by overwhelming despair.

"Are you... are you here to throw us out into the street?" Brenda whispered, her voice cracking. "We have nowhere to go, Victoria. Every bank account is locked. Every credit card is maxed out. Even our friends won't answer our phone calls."

I stopped a few feet away from her, looking down with a calm, emotionless gaze.

"You didn't care where I went when you threw my clothes into a black garbage bag while I was recovering from major surgery," I replied, my voice steady and clear. "You didn't care when you turned my bedroom into a home gym. You didn't care that you were trading my life for Alyssa's comfort."

Brenda flinched, biting her lower lip until it turned white.

"We aren't throwing you out onto the street," I continued, my tone dropping to a measured level. "The federal receivership has provided you with a modest, two-bedroom apartment across town, along with a basic living stipend for the next three months so Alyssa can finish her required medical follow-ups at the public clinic. After that... you are on your own. Exactly like you planned for me."

Alyssa let out a soft, broken sob, burying her face in her hands. The golden girl of the Montgomery family had finally learned what it felt like to be completely invisible, discarded, and powerless.

I didn't feel pity, but I didn't feel hatred either. I felt a profound, liberating sense of closure. The past was dead. The debt had been paid in full.

I turned away from them, walking toward the grand double doors of the mansion that opened out onto the sweeping driveway.

Outside, a sleek black sedan was waiting for me. My uncle Julian was holding the door open, a warm, reassuring smile on his face. The sun was breaking through the afternoon clouds, casting a golden glow over the hilltop ridge and the city stretching out endlessly below.

As I climbed into the car and the door shut softly behind me, I took a deep, steady breath. The pain in my side was finally fading, replaced by the unbreakable strength of someone who had survived the worst and reclaimed her rightful place in the world.

The Montgomery dynasty was gone. But the legacy of the Vances was just beginning to rise.
