Chapter 4 - The Heirs of the Empire

The morning sun filtered through the reinforced glass of the private hospital recovery suite, casting long, sharp shadows across the floor. Three days had passed since Charles Montgomery was hauled away in handcuffs, and the fallout had already sent shockwaves through the corporate world. Headlines across every major financial newspaper blared the scandal: PHARMA TYCOON CHARLES MONTGOMERY ARRESTED IN ILLEGAL ORGAN COERCION SCANDAL.

Shares of Montgomery Global Pharmaceuticals had plummeted by thirty-eight percent before the opening bell on Wall Street, plunging the company into a historic liquidity crisis.

I sat propped up against a stack of crisp hospital pillows, sipping warm broth from a plastic cup. My incision still pulled and burned with every slight movement, but the heavy brain fog of the initial post-surgery days had completely cleared. Standing near the window, looking out over the city skyline, was a distinguished man in a sharp, slate-gray suit.

His name was Julian Vance. He was my mother’s younger brother—my actual uncle—a senior federal prosecutor who had spent the last two decades quietly investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding my parents' deaths and the mysterious disappearance of their infant daughter.

"The DNA confirmation came back from the state forensic lab an hour ago," Julian said, turning away from the window and walking toward my bed with a gentle, melancholy smile. He held a certified document in his hand. "There is no doubt left, Victoria. You are my sister Eleanor's child. You possess one hundred percent of the genetic markers of the Vance family line."

I looked down at my hands, resting quietly over the white blanket. "For my entire life, I thought I was just cursed," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper. "I thought there was something fundamentally wrong with me because my own father couldn't even look me in the eye without showing disgust."

Julian’s jaw tightened, a flash of cold fury crossing his features before he knelt down beside my bed, taking my hand in his warm, steady grip.

"Charles Montgomery was never your father," Julian said firmly, his voice rich with emotion. "He was a thief, a fraud, and a monster who stole everything from my family—our research, our company, and our child. But that nightmare ends today. With these legal documents, not only are we filing immediate criminal charges for kidnapping and identity theft, but we are also executing a full probate reclamation of the entire Montgomery estate."

My eyes widened slightly. "The estate?"

"Every single share, every piece of real estate, every patent, and every dollar that Charles amassed over the last twenty-two years was built on the foundation of the patents he stole from your real parents," Julian explained, a grim smile touching his lips. "Legally, under the restitution clauses of the corporate takeover act, you are the primary beneficiary and majority shareholder of Montgomery Global Pharmaceuticals. In forty-eight hours, once the emergency receivership is approved by the federal court, Charles's precious empire will belong entirely to you."

The sheer magnitude of the revelation hung in the air between us. The man who had treated me like garbage, who had forced me to sleep in a damp basement and treated my body like a biological warehouse, was about to lose everything he had ever killed or cheated for.

And it was all going to be handed to me.

Just then, the door to the recovery suite pushed open. Brenda stepped into the room.

She looked a decade older than she had three days ago. Her designer suit was rumpled, her hair was unbrushed, and the polished, untouchable mask of superiority had been completely scrubbed away by panic and humiliation. Behind her stood Alyssa, pushing herself in the transport wheelchair, her face pale and drawn.

Brenda didn't look at Julian. Her eyes locked directly onto me, brimming with a desperate, pathetic mixture of fear and false familiarity.

"Victoria, darling," Brenda whimpered, taking a hesitant step forward and holding out her trembling hands. "Please... you have to listen to us. There's been some kind of horrible, catastrophic misunderstanding. Charles... Charles was just stressed about the company. He didn't mean what he said in here. We raised you! We gave you a home!"

I stared at her, not saying a word. The sheer audacity of her appearance took my breath away.

Julian stood up slowly, stepping protectively in front of my bed like a shield. He looked down at Brenda with absolute contempt.

"Mrs. Montgomery," Julian said, his voice freezing the air in the room. "I suggest you check your legal standing before you speak another word to my niece. Your bank accounts have already been frozen by a federal judge. The mansion on the ridge is currently under a forfeiture warrant. And your husband is currently sitting in a maximum-security holding facility facing twenty-five years to life."

Brenda staggered backward as if she had been physically struck. "No... that's not possible... our assets... our lawyers said—"

"Your lawyers resigned the moment the genetic audit and the corporate fraud charges were made public," Julian interrupted coldly. "You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises of the Montgomery estate. Every single vehicle, every piece of jewelry, and every luxury item purchased with stolen funds is now the property of the estate receivership."

Alyssa let out a strangled, desperate sob from her wheelchair, clutching her chest right over the surgical site where my kidney was currently keeping her alive. "Mom... make him stop... what are we going to do? Where are we going to live?"

Brenda couldn't answer. She simply stared at me with wide, terrified eyes, finally realizing the terrifying truth of the table turning.

I slowly shifted my weight against the pillows, looking down at them with absolute, unshakeable calm.

"You told me I was useless," I said softly, my voice cutting through the silence of the room like a razor blade. "You told me spare parts don't need a bedroom. You were right about one thing, Brenda... I don't need that basement anymore."

May you like

Brenda opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She grabbed the handles of Alyssa's wheelchair, turned sharply around, and practically fled down the hallway, their hurried footsteps echoing away into nothingness.

Julian watched them go, then turned back to me with an approving nod. "That was just the warm-up, Victoria. Tomorrow, we take back the boardroom."
