Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Spare Son

The trial began eight months later.
Adrian faced conspiracy, securities fraud, attempted financial theft, criminal interference with Khloe’s medical safety, and related charges.
Isabella pleaded guilty earlier.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence.
Not eliminated it.
Victoria faced civil penalties and obstruction charges but avoided the most serious criminal counts because prosecutors could not prove she knew about the sedative or physical attack.
Public opinion was brutal.
Headlines called Adrian:
THE BILLION-DOLLAR BROTHER
THE HEIR WHO TRIED TO ERASE A BABY
Marcus hated the second one.
Clara was not a plot device.
She was a child.
He instructed Thorne Meridian’s communications team never to use her image.
Khloe stayed away from most of the trial.
She testified once.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did Isabella tell you why your child mattered?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Khloe looked toward Adrian.
“She said, ‘If that baby comes before Monday, we lose everything.’”
The courtroom fell silent.
Adrian lowered his head.
Then the security video played.
No dramatic music.
No narration.
Just fact.
Isabella drugging the drink.
The confrontation.
The shove.
The staged evidence.
Cameras did what frightened people sometimes could not.
They remembered without emotion.
Adrian’s lawyers argued he never intended physical harm.
That was partially true.
Prosecutors argued he knowingly created the circumstances that led to it.
The jury agreed on most counts.
Guilty.
Adrian received a long federal sentence.
At sentencing, Victoria sat behind him.
She cried the entire time.
When the judge offered Adrian the chance to speak, he said:
“My whole life, my mother protected me from consequences.”
Victoria covered her mouth.
Adrian continued:
“I accepted that protection because it was easier than becoming someone who didn’t need it.”
Then:
“Isabella is responsible for what she did.”
He looked toward Marcus.
“I am responsible for what I asked her to do.”
Marcus felt no satisfaction.
But he felt something else.
Truth.
May you like
Finally.
