Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Came Too Quickly

Victoria arrived at the hospital at 11:06 p.m.

Nobody had called her.

That was the first problem.

Marcus met her outside Khloe’s room.

His mother was sixty-eight, elegant, silver-haired, and still carried herself like the woman who had spent thirty years beside Daniel Thorne building an empire.

“Where is she?” Victoria demanded.

Marcus stared.

“How did you know?”

She stopped.

“Know what?”

“That Khloe was hurt.”

“Isabella called me.”

Marcus’s face changed.

Victoria realized the mistake.

“You speak to Isabella?”

“Occasionally.”

“How occasionally?”

“Marcus, your wife is in danger and you’re interrogating me?”

“Yes.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“You are exhausted.”

“Did you know Isabella would be here tonight?”

“No.”

“Did you know she planned to meet Khloe?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her the cameras on this floor would be disabled?”

Victoria became completely still.

Marcus felt something inside himself fracture.

“Answer me.”

She lowered her voice.

“Not here.”

That was enough.

Marcus walked toward a private conference room.

David followed.

Victoria immediately protested.

“This is family.”

David shut the door.

“Khloe is my family.”

Victoria glared.

Marcus placed a printed security photograph on the table.

Isabella putting the sedative into Khloe’s drink.

Victoria looked.

Then away.

“She said she only wanted to scare her.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

David’s expression hardened.

“You knew.”

“I knew Isabella was upset.”

Marcus whispered:

“You knew.”

Victoria snapped:

“I did not tell her to hurt Khloe!”

“But you told her the cameras would be down.”

Silence.

Marcus hit the table with both hands.

“WHY?”

Victoria flinched.

“Because your father made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“The trust.”

Daniel Thorne’s will had created a succession structure nobody except Victoria and the family attorneys fully understood.

Marcus knew that if he had a child, certain voting shares moved.

What he did not know was how many.

Victoria finally explained.

Daniel had divided the Thorne Family Trust into two branches.

Marcus controlled the operating companies.

But forty-one percent of the family’s permanent voting rights remained locked.

If Marcus died without children, those shares passed to Victoria’s younger son, Adrian.

If Marcus produced a biological heir, the shares transferred into a protected trust for that child.

Until age twenty-five, the child’s legal guardian exercised proxy voting authority.

Marcus stared.

“Khloe.”

Victoria nodded.

“If something happened to you, she could eventually control almost everything.”

David whispered:

“And that frightened you?”

Victoria looked toward him.

“You don’t understand Thorne Meridian.”

“I understand attempted harm against pregnant women very well.”

Victoria ignored him.

She looked at Marcus.

“Your father changed the will two weeks before he died.”

“Why?”

“Because he trusted Khloe.”

Marcus almost laughed.

“And not you?”

Victoria’s face hardened.

“He thought I protected Adrian too much.”

“Did you?”

Silence.

Marcus understood.

Adrian.

His younger brother.

The charming failure.

Three bankrupt ventures.

Two divorces.

A gambling problem quietly settled by the family.

Daniel had spent years refusing to give Adrian more authority.

Victoria had spent years rescuing him.

Marcus asked:

“Where is Adrian?”

Victoria looked away.

That was the second mistake.

Marcus pulled out his phone.

Adrian had not attended the gala.

Claimed he was in London.

Marcus called.

Straight to voicemail.

David asked:

“Did Adrian know about the trust?”

Victoria hesitated.

“Yes.”

Marcus felt cold.

“And Isabella?”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I told her.”

“Why?”

“She and Adrian have been close.”

Marcus stared.

“How close?”

Victoria did not answer.

His phone rang.

Nathan.

Marcus answered immediately.

“Khloe?”

“She’s awake.”

Relief nearly dropped him to his knees.

“The bleeding has slowed.”

“And the baby?”

“Still stable.”

Marcus shut his eyes.

Then Nathan continued.

“She wants to speak to you.”

Marcus started toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked at Victoria.

“Do not leave.”

“You cannot order me—”

“Security.”

Two guards stepped into view.

Victoria stared at her son.

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“If you walk out of this hospital before investigators speak to you, I will personally remove you from every Thorne board before sunrise.”

Victoria whispered:

“You wouldn’t.”

Marcus looked back.

“You almost got my wife and child killed because you were protecting Adrian.”

Then he left.

Inside Khloe’s room, machines whispered softly.

She looked exhausted.

Marcus took her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For bringing you into this family.”

Khloe managed a faint smile.

“I married you, not your board.”

Then she became serious.

“Marcus.”

“What?”

“Isabella said something before she pushed me.”

He leaned closer.

“What?”

“She said the baby couldn’t be born before Monday.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why Monday?”

Khloe swallowed.

“She said after Monday, none of this would matter.”

Monday was three days away.

And on Monday morning—

May you like

Thorne Meridian’s board was scheduled to vote on a $4.2 billion acquisition proposed by Adrian.
