Chapter 13

Luciano changed the estate.

Not the wallpaper.

The authority structure.

No romantic partner would ever again supervise Ellie’s caregivers by default.

Maria returned to a schedule she chose herself.

A professional household manager handled staffing.

Any medical, educational, or therapeutic decision involving Ellie required Luciano’s direct approval and documentation from the relevant professional.

It felt excessive to some relatives.

Luciano did not care.

He also began working with a child therapist.

Not because Ellie had become severely traumatized.

Because she had started asking the same question in different forms.

“Are you sending me?”

“Does my room stay?”

“If Daddy gets married, do I live here?”

Each question told Luciano the threat had lodged somewhere inside her.

The therapist advised consistency.

No dramatic promises.

No telling Ellie that bad people would never reach her again.

Just predictable truth.

“This is your home.”

“You are staying with me.”

“Adults do not get to decide you are unwanted because they are angry.”

Luciano repeated those sentences until Ellie stopped asking every night.

The family project returned to preschool too.

Ellie and Marianne rebuilt it.

Luciano expected Ellie to remove every trace of Celina.

There had never been one.

Instead Ellie added another picture.

A photograph of herself sitting beside Luciano while he tried unsuccessfully to braid her hair.

The braid was terrible.

Ellie loved the photo.

At the bottom, with her teacher’s help, she dictated:

My daddy is learning.

When Luciano saw it, he laughed.

Then he cried when nobody was looking.

May you like

Marianne saw anyway.

She did not mention it.
