Celina faced legal consequences for the reception incident and for actions connected to the unauthorized removal and packing of Ellie’s property.
The larger manipulation was harder to prosecute.
Being cruel was not automatically criminal.
Writing misleading emails was not automatically criminal.
Shopping for consultants who might agree with you was not automatically criminal.
Rachel made Luciano understand the distinction.
“You can’t ask the legal system to punish every immoral decision.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He looked at her.
She continued.
“You’re still thinking like every wrong has an equivalent penalty.”
Luciano hated hearing that because it was true.
The court issued protective restrictions preventing Celina from contacting Ellie.
Civil claims regarding property, unauthorized decisions, and wedding-related financial disputes moved separately.
Celina’s reputation inside the Vescari social world collapsed almost immediately.
Luciano did not need to order that.
People had watched what happened.
More importantly, the engagement ended publicly enough that nobody could pretend it was postponed.
Celina moved out of the city for several months.
Before leaving, she sent Luciano a letter through Rachel.
He almost threw it away.
Rachel told him to read it once.
Celina did not ask for forgiveness.
She admitted that somewhere during the engagement, she began viewing Ellie as competition.
Then she started calling that jealousy “concern.”
Once she did that, every cruel decision became easier to justify.
She ended with:
I kept telling myself I was trying to create a family. I did not notice that I was destroying a child’s sense of one.
Luciano folded the letter.
The insight was accurate.
