Chapter 9 - Scars and Healing

Chloe didn't wait for permission. She flew past me down the porch steps, squealing with pure joy, and threw her arms around Julian's knees.

"DADDY!"

Julian dropped his duffel bag instantly, falling to his knees and scooping Chloe into his arms, burying his face in her neck as silent tears washed down his cheeks. "Oh, my sweet girl... my sweet, beautiful girl," he sobbed, clutching her tightly. "I missed you so much."

"I drew you a house!" Chloe squeaked, proudly waving her crumpled paper. "And Mommy bought a dog, but he's sleeping right now!"

Julian laughed—a genuine, deep sound I hadn't heard in nearly a decade—and looked up over Chloe’s shoulder at me. "Can I come in?"

"Yes," I said, stepping aside. "Come in."

That evening, after Chloe had finally succumbed to exhaustion and fallen asleep in her room, Julian and I sat on the back deck, listening to the gentle crash of the ocean waves against the shore.

Julian reached over to his left side, unbuttoning his shirt slightly. "I had it removed," he said quietly.

I looked over. The skin where Eleanor's tracking marker had been—and where his own matching scar lay—was now covered by a smooth stretch of skin graft, leaving behind only a faint, pale line.

"Eleanor got hers laser-removed too," I mentioned softly. "She said she wanted her skin back."

"I don't expect you to take me back, Clara," Julian said, turning to look at me, his brown eyes warm and honest. "You've built a wonderful, safe life for Chloe here without me. If all I ever get to be is a good father from a distance, I will spend the rest of my life being grateful for that."

I looked at his face in the soft twilight—the man who had committed a terrible crime, who had lied to me, but who had also risked everything to protect my life and face his own demons when the truth finally exploded. People are complex; they are neither purely evil nor purely good. They are defined by the choices they make when forced into the light.

"You were a coward, Julian," I said honestly.

"I know," he agreed without hesitation.

"But you chose to be a man when it mattered most," I continued, reaching out and placing my hand over his on the wooden armrest. "I can't pretend the past didn't happen. The old marriage we had—the one built on secrets—is dead and buried."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "And... a new one?"

May you like

"We take it slow," I said, offering him a faint, soft smile—the first real smile I had given him in over two years. "One day at a time. No secrets. Ever again."

Julian squeezed my hand, bowing his head in profound relief. "No secrets. I swear."
