Chapter 1 - The Birthday Tattoo

At my daughter's 4th birthday pool party, she shrieked, pointing at my stepmom’s ribs: "Mommy, Daddy's in there!" I laughed, until I saw the grotesque truth inked on Eleanor's skin. "What the hell is that?!" I gasped. My husband dropped his tongs, his face pale as a ghost. His terrifying reaction didn't just shatter my reality—it unleashed a nightmare I could never escape...
For my daughter Chloe's fourth birthday, my husband, Julian, and I decided to celebrate at home with a massive family pool party. The summer heat was unbearable, so we set up everything in the backyard.
Her friends from preschool came over, along with our entire family.
Even my stepmom, Eleanor, managed to come. The thing is, ever since Eleanor married my father fifteen years ago, she had ALWAYS kept her distance from me. I thought she just didn't like me. Lately, things had been even weirder—Julian had been acting incredibly paranoid, staring at his phone and hiding things around the house, while Eleanor kept skipping our family dinners citing mysterious "medical checkups."
So we rarely saw each other anymore.
Still, I was happy she came.
The party was wonderful. Some people were swimming, others were enjoying the food, and everyone was having a great time despite the humidity.
Then, because of the unbearable heat, Eleanor finally stepped out of her oversized cover-up and into the pool wearing a modest navy ONE-PIECE swimsuit.
At that exact moment, Chloe ran past her with her friends and suddenly stopped, shouting loudly enough for everyone to hear:
"Mommy, Daddy's in there!"
I turned around and saw Chloe pointing straight at ELEANOR'S EXPOSED SIDE.
Everyone burst out laughing, including me. I thought she was just being a silly toddler. But then I felt embarrassed as the neighbors kept staring. I hurried over to Chloe and told her it wasn't polite to point at people's bodies, then tried to lead her away.
But my daughter frowned, yanked her hand away, and said again, louder this time:
"No! DADDY'S IN THERE!"
Julian was standing nearby at the grill. He suddenly went completely frozen and pale, not moving a muscle.
I pointed at Julian and said:
"Sweetheart, Daddy is standing right here making hot dogs. See?"
Chloe suddenly started CRYING—a desperate, frightened wail. It wasn't a fake tantrum; she was genuinely distressed.
I was completely shocked.
She kept insisting that Daddy was on Eleanor.
Eleanor looked absolutely terrified, her face flushed red, and frantically reached for her towel to cover herself up as fast as possible.
I was trying to calm Chloe down when she grabbed my wrist and dragged me right back over to the edge of the pool.
She kept pointing furiously at Eleanor's ribs.
Then I took a CLOSER look at Eleanor's skin just as the swimsuit pulled tight, and finally saw WHAT my daughter had been pointing at.
My blood ran completely cold. The world seemed to stop spinning. I screamed:
May you like
"No... THIS CAN'T BE POSSIBLE! Eleanor, what the hell is that?!"
I called Julian over. He dropped his grilling tongs onto the concrete, looking like he had just seen a ghost. And when he finally spoke, his terrifying reaction proved that my worst nightmare was just beginning
