Chapter 2 - The Crimson Signature

The pool deck fell into a suffocating silence, save for the hum of the filter and Chloe’s muffled sobs against my hip. Eleanor frantically clutched her damp towel against her torso, her knuckles white, her eyes darting toward the back gate as if calculating her odds of a sprint.

"Show me," I said. My voice didn't sound like my own. It was flat, ice-cold, stripped of all color.

"Clara, please, it’s just a misunderstanding," Eleanor stammered, backing toward the deep end. "Your daughter is four. She’s confused—"

"Show me!" I roared.

The shock of my voice snapped Julian out of his trance. He took a jerky step forward, his hands raised in a pacifying gesture, but his eyes were wide with a primal, animalistic panic. "Clara, babe, calm down. You're scaring the guests. Let's just talk inside—"

I shoved him back with a force I didn't know I possessed. "Don't touch me!" I whipped around to Eleanor. "If you don't drop that towel right now, I will rip it off you myself."

My father, Arthur, stepped out from the patio shade, holding a half-empty beer. "What on earth is going on over here? Clara, what are you shouting at Eleanor for?"

"Ask your wife," I hissed, never taking my eyes off her.

Eleanor swallowed hard. Realizing she was surrounded, her shoulders slumped in defeat. Slowly, with trembling fingers, she lowered the towel just enough to expose her left ribcage, right beneath the armhole of her navy swimsuit.

There, etched permanently into her flesh in delicate crimson ink, was a high-resolution portrait tattoo. It was a stylistic rendering of a man’s face, framed by intricate geometric line art and a specific date beneath it: 08.14.2018.

The face was unmistakably Julian.

It wasn't a vague likeness. It captured the exact curve of his jaw, the tiny notch in his left eyebrow from a childhood fence-jumping incident, and the distinct, star-shaped mole just below his collarbone. Chloe knew her father’s face better than anyone—she spent every morning tracing his stubble while he read her bedtime stories. She hadn't seen a random pattern; she had seen her father’s portrait on her stepmother's skin.

And the date—August 14, 2018—was three weeks before Julian and I were married.

I felt the air leave my lungs, as if someone had slammed a sledgehammer directly into my chest. "Julian..." I whispered, turning slowly to face my husband. "What is that?"

Julian’s mouth opened and closed, no sound coming out. His skin had turned a sickening shade of grey. "Clara... it’s not... it’s not what you think..."

"Not what I think?" I let out a harsh, hysterical laugh that turned into a sob. "My stepmother has your face tattooed on her body with a date from six years ago! What else could it possibly mean?!"

"Clara, stop!" Arthur barked, marching over, his face flushed red with indignation. "Have you lost your mind? Eleanor, tell her what this nonsense is."

Eleanor couldn't look Arthur in the eye. She stared at the concrete pool deck, tears silently leaking down her cheeks. "Arthur... I’m sorry," she whispered.

"Sorry for what?!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking. "Eleanor, look at me! What is he talking about?"

"She isn't just your wife, Dad," I said, the bitter realization settling into my marrow like poison. "She’s been screwing my husband."

The backyard erupted into chaos. Neighbours began gathering their children and making hasty exits through the side gate. My mother-in-law gasped and clutched her pearls, while my father stood frozen, his eyes darting between his wife and my husband in utter disbelief.

"Julian," I said, stepping right up to him, my voice dangerously low. "Explain it to me. Right now."

"I can't... not here, Clara," Julian choked out, looking around at the lingering guests. "Please. Just let everyone leave. I'll tell you everything. I swear to God I'll tell you everything."

May you like

"You'll tell me now!" I shrieked.

"He can't tell you, Clara," Eleanor said softly. She had wrapped the towel back around herself, her voice suddenly devoid of panic, replaced by a hollow, terrifying air of resignation. "Because if he tells you the truth, it won't just ruin your marriage. It will destroy all of us."
