Chapter 4 - A True ReckoningVictor’s gaze dropped to the ring on Elena’s hand, then to her face. He took one trembling step toward her. “You have her eyes,” he whispered.

Elena did not answer. She had not come for tenderness; she had come for truth.

Vanessa looked around the ballroom, desperate, but the room she had ruled with humiliation and fear was no longer hers. Guests who once smiled at her were staring with open disgust.

Elena bent down, picked up one of the fallen silver tray lids, and placed it quietly on a nearby table. A servant again—except now everyone understood she had never been one in spirit.

“Why did you serve tonight?” Victor asked, overcome at last by the cost of all those silent years.

Elena looked at him with a sadness that hurt more than rage.

“Because I wanted to see,” she said softly, “whether you’d recognize your own blood before I had to remind you.”

And Vanessa, still on the marble floor beneath the glittering chandeliers, finally understood the cruelest part of it all: The girl she had tried to crush was the heir she had buried alive, and her dignity was entirely unshakeable.
