Chapter 2 - The Ghost of IsabelleNo one moved. No one breathed.

Elena stood above her, perfectly still. Then, very slowly, she set down her remaining tray. She reached for one of her white gloves and peeled it off.

Under the ballroom light, a ring flashed on her finger. It was an old, exquisite family ring—heavy with history, set with a dark stone surrounded by tiny diamonds, unmistakably expensive and painfully familiar.

Vanessa’s face changed instantly. The fury vanished. The color drained from her skin.

She knew that ring. The ring belonged to the Laurent family—not the branch Vanessa had married into, but the original line. The bloodline that should have inherited everything.

“That ring belonged to Isabelle Laurent…” a guest whispered.

The name moved through the crowd like a draft through a crypt. Isabelle Laurent. The first wife of Adrian Laurent’s late uncle. The woman who had vanished from public life after a "tragic breakdown" nearly twenty years ago. The woman whose child had supposedly died with her in a terrible accident no one ever fully explained.

Elena saw the guilt in Vanessa's eyes. So did everyone else.

A tall older man at the back of the room—Victor Laurent, head of the family—stepped forward, his face gone hard and pale. He had spent years pretending the past was buried, but now it was standing in front of him wearing a maid’s uniform.

“Elena…” he whispered, though he had not heard that name in years.

Vanessa pushed herself halfway up from the floor, panic creeping into her voice. “Victor, don’t—”

“Be quiet,” he said without looking at her.
