Chapter 9 - Grandma’s Last KeyGrandma returned home eventually.

Not the same home emotionally.

The courtyard changed first.

The dog enclosure disappeared.

In its place, Grandma planted white roses.

I asked why.

She said:

“Because Vanessa liked red.”

Spite gardening.

Healthy.

Grandma regained weight.

Her hair grew fuller.

The bruises disappeared.

The nightmares took longer.

One evening she called me into Dad’s office.

She handed me another key.

I stared.

“You’re kidding.”

She laughed.

“No safe.”

“What then?”

Dad’s old military trunk.

Inside were letters.

One for every year I had been away.

Dad had written but never mailed them.

Apparently he wanted to hand them to me when I returned.

The final one:

My little soldier,

I keep worrying I won’t be here when you come home.

My eyes blurred.

If that happens, do not spend your life avenging me.

Protect what matters.

Then build something the people who hurt us cannot destroy.

I stopped reading.

Grandma touched my hand.

“He knew you.”

I cried.

Finally.

Not in a stairwell.

Not alone.

With her.

That night we drank cinnamon coffee on the porch.

No company meeting.

No investigators.

May you like

No lawyers.

Just two women who survived long enough to miss the same man together.
