Chapter 8 - The Son of the Woman I HatedTyler served time.

Less than Vanessa.

Cooperation mattered.

Four years later, he requested a meeting.

I almost refused.

Grandma surprised me.

“Go.”

“Why?”

“So you can decide based on who he is now instead of who he was then.”

Annoyingly wise woman.

We met at a coffee shop.

Tyler looked older.

He worked in a warehouse.

No family money.

No trust.

No expensive car.

He said:

“I’m sorry.”

I waited.

He understood.

“For changing your father’s medical records.”

“Yes.”

“For helping my mother forge signatures.”

“Yes.”

“For staying in that house while your grandmother was being abused.”

My jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“I knew enough to ask questions.”

He looked down.

“I chose not to.”

That was the sentence I needed.

Not:

Mom manipulated me.

Not:

I was young.

Not:

I didn’t know she would go that far.

He continued.

“I am not asking you to tell Grandma I’m different.”

“Good.”

“I’m not asking to work at Whitmore.”

“Good.”

“I just wanted to say it without asking you to fix the consequences.”

I believed him.

That did not make us family.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But when he stood to leave, I said:

“Keep your life honest.”

He nodded.

“I’m trying.”

Sometimes that is all redemption should receive at first.

The opportunity to continue without applause.
